Victus by HP 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop 15-fb3000 (A8RT4AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I open a game on my laptop, play it for a short time at a level that turns the fans on, then I exit the game. I put the laptop in sleep mode and wait a while, about 30 seconds. Then I open the game again and the laptop restarts within 5-10 seconds. This is the exact situation I found to be happening with my laptop's chronic sleep mode restart problem. I checked that all drivers are up to date and there is no temperature problem. I checked Windows and there is no problem. I did everything related to power management and still nothing. When I turn off the laptop in hibernate or shut down mode instead of sleep mode, the problem I mentioned does not occur. But I also want to use sleep mode, please help me solve this problem.

Why These Two Settings Likely Worked

Let me explain why “Do nothing when lid is closed” and “Turning off PCI Express Link State Power Management” may have resolved the sleep-related restart issue:

Lid Close Action: Do Nothing

  • When set to Sleep, closing the lid can trigger a low-power state transition that may not complete cleanly if the system is still managing GPU/CPU power states after gaming.
  • By setting it to Do Nothing, you avoid an automatic sleep trigger that might conflict with background processes or driver states — especially after high-performance tasks like gaming.

PCI Express Link State Power Management: Off

  • This setting controls how aggressively the system powers down PCIe devices (like the GPU) during idle or sleep.
  • Aggressive power-down (Maximum Power Savings) can cause instability when waking from sleep, especially with discrete GPUs or high-performance integrated graphics.
  • Turning it Off ensures the GPU and other PCIe devices remain in a more stable state, reducing the chance of a crash or restart on wake.

Thanks again for the confirmation.

@B82WJEA, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your laptop restarts unexpectedly after sleep, especially when everything else seems to be working fine.
Your Victus by HP 15-fb3000 restarts after waking from sleep mode, especially after gaming. Hibernate and shutdown work fine, but sleep mode causes a restart within seconds of launching a game again.
You've already done a great job checking drivers, temperatures, and power settings. Let's go a bit deeper to resolve this.

Check for Critical Event Logs

Let’s confirm what’s triggering the restart:

  • Press Win + X → select Event Viewer
  • Go to Windows Logs > System
  • Look for Critical or Error events around the time of the restart
  • Pay attention to entries like Kernel-Power, BugCheck, or ACPI errors

This can help pinpoint if it’s a driver, power, or hardware issue.

Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can interfere with sleep/hibernate transitions.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup
  • Save changes and reboot

Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

Even if Windows says drivers are up to date, it’s best to manually check HP’s support site:

  • Visit: Official HP® Support
  • Download and install the latest BIOS, AMD Chipset, and Graphics drivers
  • Restart after each installation

Adjust Sleep Power Settings

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings
  • Click Change advanced power settings
  • Expand Processor power management → set Minimum processor state to 5%
  • Expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management → set to Off
  • Expand Sleep > Allow hybrid sleep → set to Off

Disable Wake Timers

  • In the same advanced power settings menu:
    • Expand Sleep > Allow wake timers → set to Disable

Check AMD Adrenaline Settings (if installed)

If you use AMD Adrenaline software:

  • Open it → go to Performance > Tuning
  • Disable Auto Overclocking or Manual Tuning
  • Also check Power Saving features under Settings > Preferences

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

Let’s rule out hardware faults:

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly → then F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
  • Run System Tests > Extensive Test (especially memory and thermal tests)

Optional Test

Try this:

  • After exiting the game, wait 1–2 minutes before putting the laptop to sleep.
  • Then wake it and launch the game again.

If the restart doesn’t happen, it may be related to residual GPU/CPU power states not resetting properly before sleep.

From the power management settings, I selected the option to choose what happens when closing the lid, and I set it to do nothing when I close the lid. Additionally, I changed the advanced power settings, then PCI Express, then turned off link power state management. I found that this combination was the only one that worked. I tried all the other settings, and in the end, these two worked. I have no idea why these two worked.
