Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just purchased an HP laptop model 14-cf0051od and I tried a few SD cards in the SD card reader slot and its not reading. I tried updating drivers to no avail. Thanks in advance!

@Kellie71,

Welcome to HP Support Community,

Let's run the Windows update troubleshooter.

Download and install the troubleshooter from this link.

Now try to perform Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

If the issue persists, Go into device manager and uninstall the card reader, it should be listed as IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

This will uninstall and reinstall the driver for the card reader.

  1. Open Device Manager (Hold Windows + X key and select device manager)

  2. Follow the instructions in the preceding procedure to uninstall the device.

  3. If you are prompted to restart the computer, follow these steps:

    • Plug in the device and then restart the computer. The device will be detected and reinstalled after Windows restarts.
    • Follow any instructions on-screen to complete installation.

  4. If you are not prompted to restart the computer, follow these steps:

    • In Device Manager, in the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes.

*Note:
Scan for hardware changes will not reinstall a Plug and Play device if a driver is already installed on the computer. If the device has not been uninstalled, Scan for hardware changes will not detect the connection of the device as a change. You must uninstall a Plug and Play device for Windows to start an installation when you connect the device again.

You can update the Bios, Chipset and Realtek Card Reader Driver for your PC from our HP support website, using this link or download it using HP Support Assistant.

To download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.

Thank you so much for your detailed reply, Jeet! I tried everything I could but one thing...

You said, "If the issue persists, Go into device manager and uninstall the card reader, it should be listed as IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. This will uninstall and reinstall the driver for the card reader."

But I don't see the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers unless I'm missing them? I have attached what my device manager has as options. Do you think this could be the issue?

Thanks!

@Kellie71,

This looks like a possible hardware failure with the notebook. I would recommend you contact our HP support team for further assistance.
