Hello, I have Windows 11 HP Envy. Every time there's a software update needed (including the very first time I turned the computer on after purchase), it freezes/takes hours and even days to load the updates. At one point the screen just goes black and I cant do anything except hold the power button and then turn it on again, hoping this time it'll finish the updates before goin dark. I'm stuck in that loop every single time and sure it's on me for being too lazy to get it checked sooner but it's been a year and a half and I've finally snapped. Please help. Thanks.

Hi @Maka25,

I understand your HP Envy gets stuck or freezes every time it tries to install Windows updates, sometimes going to a black screen. Let’s go through a few steps to fix this update loop and get your system working normally.

    a. Perform a Power Reset
      • Turn off the laptop and unplug the charger.
      • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain residual power.
      • Reconnect the charger (but do not connect any USB devices) and turn it on.

    b. Boot into Windows Update Troubleshooter
      • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other Troubleshooters.
      • Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter and allow it to detect and repair issues.

    c. Update BIOS and Drivers Using HP Support Assistant
      • Open HP Support Assistant from the Start Menu.
      • Go to Updates and install any available BIOS, chipset, or driver updates.
      • Restart the laptop once updates complete.

    d. Install Updates in Clean Boot Mode (To Avoid Freezing)
      • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
      • Go to Services tab → Check Hide all Microsoft services → Click Disable all.
      • Go to Startup tab → Open Task Manager → Disable all startup apps.
      • Restart the PC and try updating Windows again.

I hope this helps.

Hello, thank you so much for reaching out.

I followed all the steps except when I try to run troubleshoot, it says service currently unavailable. I don't have any scheduled software updates as of now to check the progress from these instructions but as I was updating BIOS it crashed/froze and I had to turn it off/on for it to run the update. Then, when I restarted the computer at the very last step, same thing: just black screen and loud processing sounds.

So, I'm assuming the steps didn't work? Not sure if it's a hardware problem if even a simple restart caused it to freeze but it could be from all the changes/updates within a short period. Idk.
