Subject: HP Laptop shows "Boot Device Not Found" (Hard Disk - 3F0)

Dear HP Support,

I am using an HP EliteBook 840 G5 (Product No: 3JX27EA, Serial No: [edited]).

My laptop is not booting and shows the following error message:

"Boot Device Not Found"

"Hard Disk - (3F0)"

I ran the HP Hardware Diagnostics (F2) and received this message during the hard disk check:

"No hard drive installed. Please check that the power and data cables are connected properly."

It seems the system cannot detect the hard drive, possibly due to a hardware failure or loose connection.

Can you please assist me with the next steps to fix this issue?

Also, I would like to know the service options available since the warranty has expired.

Thank you,

Hello milon124 ,

Thank you for reaching out. Regarding the issue you’re experiencing with "Boot Device Not Found" (Hard Disk - 3F0) on your HP EliteBook 840 G5 Product No: 3JX27EA.

Kindly review the instructions as below

- Were there any recent changes made to the windows operating system or drivers

- Was the HDD at any time changed or upgraded from the time laptop was shipped to you.

- Is the laptop still booting to windows after the error or completely stuck at the error screen

- We at HP do not encourage hardware upgrades unless advised in any form of hp documentation

-To set the BIOS to default, restart your computer and press the indicated key (like DEL, F2, F10, or ESC) to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup utility. Once in the setup, find the option to load default or optimized defaults, which is often on the main screen or under an "Exit" tab. Confirm the action, and then select the option to save changes and exit to restart the computer with the default settings .

- Check in the boot order if the HDD is still listed under the devices

- Find all relevant guides and drivers from the support page here -

This will help us narrow down the cause and suggest the best fix.

**please note that attempting to upgrade or replace any hardware components on your own may not be covered under the standard warranty. It’s important to ensure the device is handled carefully to avoid potential damage.
