Subject: Recurring "Boot Device Not Found (3F0)" and Blue Screen Crashes on HP EliteBook 840 G8

Device Details:
* Model: HP EliteBook 840 G8 Laptop
* Processor: 11th Generation Intel Core
* Memory: 16GB RAM
* Storage: 512GB SSD

Issue Description:
I am experiencing a recurring and intermittent hardware/system stability issue with my laptop that happens every 7 to 15 days.

1. Behavior Pattern: The laptop works completely fine for about a week to two weeks. Suddenly, while performing normal tasks (such as running software like DaVinci Resolve or streaming video on YouTube), the system freezes entirely, displays a Blue Screen ("Your PC ran into a problem"), and automatically restarts.
2. Boot Failure: Immediately following the crash, the laptop fails to boot into Windows and displays a black screen with the following error message:
* BootDevice Not Found
* Please install an operating system on your hard disk.
* Hard Disk - (3F0)
* F2 System Diagnostics
* For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup

Troubleshooting Context:
Reinstalling Windows only temporarily fixes the problem, but the exact same 3F0 boot error and freezing behavior return after roughly 1 to 2 weeks. Because this keeps recurring periodically, I suspect it may be related to an intermittent SSD connection issue, thermal throttling, or an underlying storage hardware failure.

Could you please advise on the recommended diagnostic steps or hardware replacement procedures to permanently resolve this error?

Hi @Habib22_22,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for providing the HP EliteBook 840 G8 specifications and the detailed timeline. The fact that the system works normally for 1–2 weeks, then freezes/blue-screens and immediately reports Boot Device Not Found (3F0), with the issue returning even after reinstalling Windows, is important.

A Windows reinstallation temporarily resolving the problem does not rule out a hardware issue. Because the system is intermittently losing access to the boot drive, I recommend checking the storage hardware first rather than reinstalling Windows again.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
When the 3F0 error occurs:

  1. Turn off the notebook.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly to open the Startup Menu.
  3. Press F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
  4. Select Component Tests > Storage
  5. Run the available SSD/Storage test
  6. If the quick test passes, run the Extensive Test as well.

HP provides these diagnostics specifically to check hardware components when startup or storage problems occur.

If the storage test reports a failure, do not reinstall Windows again. Record the 24-digit Failure ID and provide it here. That result will help determine whether the SSD requires replacement or whether further hardware service is needed.

If the storage test passes
If both storage tests pass, let us know the results. We can then look at the other possible causes, including the BIOS/storage configuration, system firmware, Windows crash information, and whether the SSD is intermittently disappearing from the system.

Also check whether the SSD is detected in the BIOS when the 3F0 error occurs. Press F10 at startup to enter BIOS Setup and check the available storage/device information. If the SSD is missing there, that would be particularly significant because it would point away from a normal Windows/software problem.

Important
Because the failure is recurring and the 3F0 error occurs immediately after the blue-screen crash, I would back up all important personal data now while the notebook is working normally. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling Windows until the storage hardware has been tested.

If possible, the next time the issue occurs, provide:

  • The SSD Storage/Extensive Test result
  • The 24-digit Failure ID, if one is generated
  • Whether the SSD is detected in BIOS
  • The exact blue-screen error/stop code, if visible

With those results, we can determine whether this is most likely a failing SSD/storage connection or whether we need to investigate the system/firmware side further.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
