HP Spectre x360 14 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 14-eu0000 (7K633AV)

What is it that I experienced?

As of BIOS version F12, the laptop now finally turns the display completely off when the lid is shut. Thanks HP! The intended behaviour when I close the laptop lid is for the display to turn off and for the system to go into suspend/standby mode. However, BIOS version F12 does not fix its inconsistency. That is, the laptop although turns off the display now, does NOT ALWAYS go into suspend mode. How do I know this? Sometimes when I open the lid, the laptop has not locked itself and turns on directly to the desktop without any login prompt; and the wifi is still operating. The intended behaviour when the lid is closed is to always go into suspend mode. That is that the laptop locks itself and disables the network adapter. However, in my case, it does this but not always. This happens "on and off". That is that it occurs frequently but not always. Thus is why I refer to it as being inconsistent. The lid when opened, however, turns the screen on automatically as intended.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Close the lid of the laptop when in the desktop and reopen
  2. Type password, pin, fingerprint, etc.. to log in to the desktop
  3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 again and again to notice the behaviour

Recent firmware changes

  • Updated to BIOS version F12
  • The symptoms I mentioned were there in prior versions as well. In fact, version F12 fixes a huge issue that has being plaguing this laptop and good job on that HP!

Why is this so important?

Because of two reasons:

  1. The fact that the laptop does not suspend thus does not lock is a major security issue. Imagine if a third party gets hold of the laptop while this happens. They may steal or do as they wish with my personal property as they have complete access to it.
  2. Potential power savings. We have heard of the stories how modern standby consumes so much of power as a result of not disabling the network adapter. Similarly, because the laptop does not sleep, the network adapter continues to function, thus reducing battery life.

I hope the good people at HP are paying attention to this and are willing to fix this issue! Thank you!
