Spectre x360 - 13-w020ca
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a late-2016 Spectre x360 (13-w0xx). After the latest update to Windows 10 v1909 the scrolling performance of the Synaptics TouchPad has been very imprecise and unresponsive. I'm using the latest TouchPad driver for this model: a "Synaptics SMBus TouchPad Driver", version 19.5.35.47. I notice a lot of complaints on this forum about this driver version. Rolling back to the previous version (19.5.10.75) has not helped.

By comparison, I also have a late-2019 Spectre x360 and it currently is using a "Synaptics Precision Touchpad Filter Driver", version 19.5.35.46 which has enabled the Microsoft precision touchpad features, and is much more responsive and precise.

Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade to the Precision TouchPad Filter Driver on a 2016 model? If so, what steps should I take?

Can we expect to see a Microsoft Precision compatible driver for the older models sometime in the near future?

@lazyx,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are facing issues with touchpad performance.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

Below is the latest touchpad driver available for your computer. I recommend you keep checking the HP website (Driver section for your computer) as all the driver updates will be uploaded there.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp92501-93000/sp92533.exe

Alternately, you can download and install the HP support assistant from the below link and it will automatically download and install all the latest drivers available for your computer.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Thanks for getting back to me. The link you have provided (sp92533) is for version 19.5.10.75 of the Synaptics TouchPad driver. If I install that driver, Windows will update it automatically to version 19.5.35.47 on a subsequent reboot. The latter driver corresponds to softpak sp98930.

Both driver versions have poor performance and precision following the Windows v1909 upgrade. In addition the newer 19.5.35.47 driver lacks the ClickPad tab under mouse settings (a.k.a. the Synaptics Control Panel App), making it impossible to  tune of the performance settings to some reasonable level.

It seems Windows Update believes the TouchPad to be a precision device and is attempting to install a precision driver (19.5.35.47) even though the BIOS does not have precision support at this point. Thus the TouchPad settings do not appear in Windows Settings as they are supposed to. There is therefore no way to adjust the TouchPad settings with this driver.

I'm hoping you can tell me if HP will roll-out precision TouchPad support for older (non-gem cut) Spectre x360 models as it has for more recent models. If not, I fear we will be stuck with poor TouchPad performance since all newer drivers expect precision hardware and for the settings to be managed by Windows.

@lazyx,

I recommend you wait for another update from Windows. The driver should be updated in the coming Windows updates and it should take care of the issue.
