Microsoft Windows 11

The clickpad shows up in device manager.  However, there no way to turn it off and on.  USB mouse works great.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

@cpuman6mgl, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your Synaptics SMBus Touchpad is visible in Device Manager but not functioning or configurable, here are a few steps to help resolve the issue:

Check Touchpad Settings in Windows

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  2. Ensure the Touchpad toggle is turned On.
  3. If the option is missing, proceed to the next steps.

Update or Reinstall the Touchpad Driver

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Right-click Synaptics SMBus Touchpad and choose Update driver.
  4. Select Search automatically for drivers.
    • If no update is found, try Uninstall device, then restart your laptop. Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.

Alternatively, you can manually download the latest touchpad driver from HP: Official HP® Support

Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  3. Select Component Tests > Mouse/Touchpad and run the test.

BIOS Update (if applicable)

Sometimes, a BIOS update can resolve hardware detection issues:

System Restore (if issue started recently)

  1. Press Windows + R, type rstrui.exe, and press Enter.
  2. Follow the prompts to restore your system to a point when the touchpad was working.

I tried these steps by windows 11 device manager still shows the yellow triangle on the touchpad.  The touchpad works in the bios screen perfectly.  Seems to be a Windows 11 resource or driver problem but nothing works to fix it.
