I have a HP ProBook 440 G8 Notebook PC 464N0AV. The power button doesn't work to turn off the screen, or to power on the laptop when it is off. How can i troubleshoot/fix this since my warrenty has finished.

The button doesn’t respond with Windows running or while shut off (except in rare moments). I tested the Power button via the BIOS keyboard test, and the laptop did not register when i pressed the Power button.

Solution: In BIOS i turned on «Power on when laptop is plugged» and «Power on when the lid is opened» settings, so i don’t need the Power button.

NB: Used restart in Windows rather than shutting it off when getting into BIOS incase it wouldn’t turn back on.

Hi @helpmes,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand that the power button on your HP ProBook 440 G8 (464N0AV) is not responding when you try to turn the laptop on or use it to turn off the screen.

Since the system is out of warranty, let's first determine whether this is a Windows power-setting issue or a hardware issue.

Please try:

Check the power-button setting

  • Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  • Select Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Check what When I press the power button is set to for both On battery and Plugged in.
  • If you want the button to turn off the display, note that Windows normally offers actions such as Sleep, Hibernate, Shut down, or Do nothing rather than a dedicated "turn off screen" action.

Test whether the button responds at all

  • With Windows running, briefly press the power button once.
  • Check whether the laptop goe
  • ]s to sleep or performs the action configured above.
  • Avoid holding the button down unless the system is completely unresponsive.

Check for a hardware response

  • Shut down Windows completely.
  • Connect the AC adapter.
  • Press the power button normally and check whether any LED, fan, or screen activity occurs.

If the laptop does not respond to the power button even when completely powered off, this is less likely to be a Windows power-setting issue and may require hardware assessment.

Please let me know whether the power button works at all while Windows is running, and whether the laptop can be powered on using any other method. This will help determine the next step.
