HP Thunderbolt 4 Ultra 180W G6 Dock

I recently got Thunderbolt 4 Ultra G6 Dock (180W) and it has been great, except one annoyance with USB power.

When the laptop is unplugged, the USB ports seem to still be powered, as the mouse and keyboard LEDs stay on indefinitely. The only solution seems to be to unplug the dock power, which is impractical. This issue doesn't occur when the dock is initially powered on, only when the laptop is plugged in and then unplugged.

I checked the dock's web configuration to see if this is intentional behavior and if it can be disabled, but I couldn't find any such option.

Hello Jan1111111,

Thank you for your query,

It seems like you are experiencing an issue where the USB ports of your HP Thunderbolt 4 Ultra G6 Dock (180W) continue to supply power even when the laptop is unplugged. This can indeed be frustrating, particularly if it requires you to unplug the dock power as a workaround. Unfortunately, the specific behavior you are describing might not directly be adjustable via the dock's web configuration or settings.

Here are a few suggestions you can try to resolve this:

Quick Troubleshooting Steps

Update Firmware/Drivers: Check for the latest dock firmware and Thunderbolt drivers via HP Support Assistant or the dock's web configuration page (access via its IP address). Updates often fix power management quirks.[HP Thunderbolt G6 Whitepaper]

Laptop Power Settings: In Windows Power Options > USB settings, disable "USB Selective Suspend" and check Thunderbolt power policies. This can prevent residual powering.

Dock Web Config: Connect to the dock's built-in webpage (via wireless card or Ethernet) and review Power/USB sections—some models have "Always-On USB" toggles worth disabling.

BIOS Check: In your laptop BIOS, look for Thunderbolt/Dock power options under Advanced > Device Configuration.

A factory reset of the dock (via web interface or power cycle sequence) might clear glitches, but note it resets custom settings. If the issue persists, this could be expected behavior for power delivery specs.
