When updating the Bios to v. 1.08.00 rev A (sp156950) I got the error "Thunderbolt retimer. Fail to switch TBT to FW update mode". Upon selecting OK the laptop rebooted OK, but my Anker 563 USB-C hub would no longer support HDMI via USB-C
In Device Manager I noted that the UCM-USCI ACPI device showed an error with "Windows has stopped, Code 43". I disabled this device in Device Manager, rebooted, and re-tried installing the BIOS update. It succeeded this time. Then I re-enabled the UCM-USCI ACPI device and it worked fine from there on. My Anker 563 was able to support HDMI via USB-C again.
The Anker requires the Silicone Motion USB Display driver. I'm not sure if that is relevant, but I did remove it from the PC during trouble shooting, and re-installed it after the firmware finally upgraded.
Posting just in case this is helpful to anyone else.
