Hey everyone,

i got a problem for a while now. My Touchpad isn´t working.

Sometimes i can move the cursor, but it glitches back and forth.

Sometimes i can move the cursor, but the pad suddenly registers a click (even if it is untouched).

Sometimes i can´t move the cursor at all.

Sometimes the cursor is simply gone. Clicking seems to do something, but no moving is possible.

And sometimes it just works fine.

It can change beween this stages even though i don´t change anything. E.g. I was browsing the internet, and tried the pad again and it suddenly worked fine.

I tried:

Deactivate driver

Deinstalling driver and restart pc

Restart PC

Update driver (newest update was installed)

Set Bios back to default

I have no idea what to do, and my warrenty runs out in about a month, so i need to find out if it´s a hardware or software problem

Thanks for any advice

Hi @Flo816,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP laptop's touchpad issue could stem from either hardware malfunctions or software conflicts. Since the problem occurs intermittently, it's important to narrow down the cause. Here are some additional troubleshooting steps to help determine if it’s a hardware or software problem.

Check if Touchpad is Physically Damaged

  • Examine the touchpad surface for any visible damage or debris. Gently clean it using a microfiber cloth to remove dust or residue that could interfere with touch sensitivity.

Boot into Safe Mode

  • Restart your laptop in Safe Mode to see if the touchpad behaves normally. If the touchpad works fine in Safe Mode, it’s likely a software issue. To boot into Safe Mode:
    1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
    2. Under the Boot tab, check the Safe Boot option, select Minimal, and restart.
    3. Test the touchpad behavior.

Disable External Devices

  • Disconnect any external devices (like a mouse or USB drives) and check if the touchpad works better. Sometimes external peripherals can cause conflicts.

Update or Rollback Touchpad Drivers

  • If updating didn’t help, try rolling back the touchpad driver:
    1. Right-click Start > Device Manager.
    2. Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
    3. Right-click your touchpad driver and select Properties.
    4. Go to the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver if available.

Check for Windows Updates

  • Sometimes, a Windows update can resolve touchpad-related issues. Make sure your system is fully up-to-date by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

Test in BIOS/UEFI

  • Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI by pressing the designated key (often Esc, F10, or Del) during startup. Check if the touchpad works there. If it’s glitchy even in BIOS, this may suggest a hardware issue.

Test with a Live USB OS

  • If you have access to a Linux Live USB, boot into it and check the touchpad functionality. If the issue persists even in another operating system, it’s more likely hardware-related.

Disable Touchpad Gestures

  • Sometimes, touchpad gestures can cause erratic behavior. Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad and disable advanced gestures like two-finger scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, etc.

Check for BIOS Update

  • Check HP’s support website for any BIOS updates for your model. A BIOS update can sometimes resolve hardware-related issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I tried restarting into safe mode. Now i cant log in, because it says "Something Happened And Your PIN Isn’t Available". If i click on "Set up my pin" a window pops up, asking to find an app in the store (Apperently needed to set up the pin). If i click "yes", the window goes away, but nothingg happens. This repeats, if i press "set up my pin" again. I also tried restarting my pc, but nothing worked.

How do i get my pc to work again !?
