When I open Device Manager there is no mention of a touchpad driver under "mice and pointing device." Under "Human Interface Device"  it does show HD compliant touch pad , but when i select it it says No device files are required or have been loaded.  In my Bios there is no mention of a touchpad driver.  I have tried to download and install the Fingerprint driver from HP Support but did not work.  Can anyone suggest how I can install the correct touchpad driver please?

Hi @roypaun,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP laptop’s touchpad driver is either missing or not properly installed, which is why it’s not showing under “Mice and other pointing devices” and is listed as an HID-compliant touchpad with no driver files loaded.

Here’s how you can fix it:

1. Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

This tool can detect missing or malfunctioning drivers:

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly during boot.
  • Press F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Go to Component Tests > Mouse/Touchpad, and run the test.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

This clears temporary memory and forces Windows to re-detect hardware:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Unplug the power adapter.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

3. Update or Reinstall the Driver via Device Manager

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Human Interface Devices.
  • Right-click HID-compliant touchpad > Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for drivers.

If that doesn’t work:

  • Right-click > Uninstall device.
  • Restart your laptop. Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.

4. Download Drivers from HP Support

Visit HP’s official driver page and enter your laptop model: 👉 Official HP® Support

Look for:

  • Synaptics Touchpad Driver
  • ELAN Touchpad Driver
  • Intel I/O or Chipset Drivers (sometimes required for touchpad detection)

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
