Hi, I have an HP computer that I’ve been using for 2 years. It works perfectly fine, but suddenly the touchpad has stopped working. I spoke with an IT technician, and he said it might be related to your new Windows 11 update. What can I do to fix this issue?

@Freja22, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your touchpad suddenly stops working especially after a Windows update. Let’s walk through a few steps to get it working again.

Check if Touchpad is Disabled

Sometimes, the touchpad may be accidentally disabled via a keyboard shortcut.

  • Try pressing Fn + F5, Fn + F6, or Fn + F12 (varies by model) to toggle the touchpad.
  • You can also check in Settings > Devices > Touchpad to ensure it’s turned on.

Update or Reinstall Touchpad Drivers

Windows updates can sometimes cause driver conflicts. Here's how to fix that:

  • Open Device Manager (press Win + X > Device Manager).
  • Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  • Right-click your touchpad device (e.g., Synaptics, ELAN, or HID-compliant touchpad) and choose:
    • Update driver > Search automatically.
    • If that doesn’t help, choose Uninstall device, then restart your PC. Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.

You can also manually download the latest touchpad driver from HP: Official HP® Support

Roll Back Windows Update (if issue started after update)

If the issue began right after a Windows 11 update:

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update History.
  • Click Uninstall updates and remove the most recent one.

Use HP Support Assistant

HP Support Assistant can detect and fix hardware issues: HP Support Assistant | HP® Support

BIOS Update (Advanced)

Sometimes a BIOS update can resolve hardware detection issues:

  • Visit the HP driver page for your model.
  • Download and install the latest BIOS update. Ensure your laptop is plugged in and do not interrupt the update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
