I have a spectre x360 ([edited], windows home 24h2), who's touchpad seems to stop working quite randomly; my touch screen and a external mouse both work flawlessly.
Because the touchpad does work (mostly after restarting) there doesn't seem to be a hardware issue.
With some help from ChatGPT I have found out that visiting the device via the device manager reinitializes the driver/device and it will become responsive again.
This seems to point at the fact that the current driver in use (synaptics Pecision Touchpad Filter Driver, 19.5.35.94) is not correctly waking up the touchpad after it is put into hibernation by the energy management. ('modern standby S0').
It might be that the HP driver is being overwritten by the standard Windows driver due to it being more recent (?).
How do I fix this issue? I do not want to keep reinitializing the mousepad manually all the time, and sometimes using a mouse is just unpractical.
I have truly hated this laptop just for this unresolvable issue.
I cannot be the only one with this experience right?
Thanks for your help.

Hi @Webert78,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
You're right to be frustrated; this kind of intermittent touchpad issue can disrupt your workflow, especially on a premium device like the HP Spectre x360 14-ef0455nd. Based on your detailed observations, it does sound like a driver conflict or power management issue, particularly with Modern Standby (S0) and the Synaptics Precision Touchpad Filter Driver (v19.5.35.94).
Let's try the steps below that will help to solve the issue:
Step-by-Step Fix for Touchpad Not Waking After Sleep
1. Disable Power Management for Touchpad
This prevents Windows from turning off the touchpad to save power:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click the Synaptics Precision Touchpad > Properties.
- Go to the Power Management tab.
- Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
- Click OK and restart.
2. Reinstall the HP-Specific Touchpad Driver again
Windows Update may overwrite HP’s optimized driver. Reinstall the correct one:
- 🔗 HP Spectre x360 2-in-1 Laptop 14-ef0455nd (6F7T8EA) Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support
- Download and install the Synaptics Touchpad Driver listed for your model.
- Restart your laptop after installation.
3. Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
This checks for hardware faults and can reset the touchpad:
- Turn off your laptop.
- Turn it on and press Esc repeatedly, then press F2.
- Go to Component Tests > Mouse/Touchpad.
- Run the test and follow the instructions.

I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
