I have some questions. Is there a BIOS setting for the touchscreen on this model? I have looked but I don't see one. i had to open up the laptop to repair the fan, and to install an auxillary power button. (ribbon cable connector fell apart) Everything is working except the touch screen. (the display is fine). Due to software issues, I did a system reset and reinstalled everything. Before checking the BIOS version, I updated it via the HP driver website for this model. (I should have checked version first)

@pmg9, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding touchscreen issue!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
While there typically isn't a specific BIOS setting to enable or disable the touchscreen on HP laptops, here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:
Verify Touchscreen Functionality: Ensure that the touchscreen is enabled in Windows. You can check this by navigating to:
- Device Manager: Press Windows Key + X and select Device Manager.
- Look for Human Interface Devices, expand it, and check for HID-compliant touch screen.
- If it's listed, right-click and ensure it’s enabled. If not, try disabling and re-enabling it.
Check for Windows Updates and Drivers:
- Make sure your Windows is up to date. Sometimes updates can fix issues related to hardware.
- Check for any driver updates specifically for the touchscreen via the HP Support website. Ensure that you download and install the correct drivers for your model.
BIOS Update Confirmation:
- Double-check the BIOS update process. Ensure that the BIOS update you performed is complete and successful. Sometimes BIOS updates can resolve hardware recognition issues. You can check this by entering the BIOS during startup (usually by pressing F10 or Esc on boot).
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

I have checked device manager. There is NO entry for an HID compliant touchscreen.
Windows is completely up to date.
I have checked and rechecked the UEFI (BIOS) settings. No entry there at all about touchscreen there is an entry for touchscreen controller and there are no errors. .
As a test, I ran a live USB of Linux Mint. The touchscreen works perfectly so the hardware is ok. Through that test I discovered the touchscreen is made by eGalax. I went to their website and downloaded the touchscreen drivers. Nothing. I do have a control panel to calibrate the touchscreen when it appears.
From what I can determine and troubleshooting through copilot, windows does not recognize a touchscreen is there, so it won't do anything to a device that isn't there. This is why I approached HP support about BIOS. Maybe Windows needs a bios entry.
to reiterate, I upgraded the UEFI before checking the version. I have several older backups that I could get the UEFI version from, if I know where to look.
Alternately, can you provide a way to force Windows to know there is a touchscreen?
It's odd that it works in Linux without a hitch, but Windows doesn't even see it.
Sincerely thanking you for your assistance.

@pmg9, Thanks for coming back with those details—it really helps paint a clearer picture.
Since you’ve confirmed the touchscreen works fine under Linux, that tells us the hardware is alive and well, so this is more about Windows not “hearing” it. You’re right—there’s usually no BIOS toggle for touch, and Windows should auto-detect it as a HID device without any nudging.
A couple of thoughts you can try:
Chipset + I/O drivers: Sometimes the missing link is not the touchscreen driver itself but the chipset/IO drivers from HP’s support page. These are the “foundation” that let Windows recognize attached hardware.
Roll back BIOS (if needed): Since you mentioned updating before checking, you could try flashing back to the earlier BIOS version from your backups if it’s available on the HP site. Sometimes new firmware leaves certain devices “invisible” to Windows.
Manual scan: In Device Manager, click “Action > Scan for hardware changes” after uninstalling any ghost entries under Human Interface Devices.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Product:X7 W81UA#ABA
Model: 15-ay083nr
I just now installed these chipset updates: sp84004, sp84023, sp11711. I tried to pick the most current versions. There were a plethora of options to install! Please see if they are appropriate.

@pmg9, Thanks a ton for sharing the exact model and the steps you’ve already tried—it really helps us walk in your shoes here.
Since your touchscreen works perfectly in Linux, we know the panel itself is healthy. The trouble lies in how Windows is “listening” for it. Here are a couple of things to try next:
Double-check chipset + I/O drivers
The ones you installed are in the right ballpark, but for your HP 15-ay083nr, I’d recommend grabbing the Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Intel Serial I/O drivers directly from the HP support page for this model. These are like the “ears” Windows uses to pick up hardware signals.
Force Windows to rescan
Open Device Manager
Click on View > Show hidden devices
Expand Human Interface Devices and remove any greyed-out or ghost entries.
Then go to Action > Scan for hardware changes and see if the HID touchscreen appears.
Try HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)
Restart the laptop, tap Esc > F2, and run the component test for the touchscreen. If it passes here, we know Windows drivers are the only missing piece.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Some more details...
Upon booting, I pressed esc then F2 option. Pressing F2 on booting did not do anything.
Under HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI, I see Memory Test, Hard Drive Check, Language and Exit. I don't see any option to touch the touchscreen.
if you have any other ideas, I'm open for it.
FYI, I don't know if think this is a serial input - it may be USB. I couldn't install the calibration program by selecting the serial.
Another FYI : the Insyde BIOS Version is F. 50

I wanted to let everyone know the touchscreen problem is FIXED!!!
The BIOS (UEFI) wasn't the problem, but I did find the original (or close to it) - Insyde F.25. The update I did to F.50 wasn't any problem. I downloaded the eGalax driver from their website, (https://www.eeti.com/drivers_Win.html) and installed 5.14.0.24308, USB/RS-232, 2024.11.06. The touchscreen still wouldn't respond and the touchscreen controller kept showing up in "Mice and other pointing devices" instead of "Human Interface Devices".
After going around and around, and trying other things, I came back to the (https://www.eeti.com/drivers_Win.html) page, where I saw this:
"2015/08/12
If you have done Windows 10 Windows Update before 2015/8/12, you may find your touch device become single touch or lost function. Please refer below link for recovery SOP and related utility.
I downloaded and installed the patch, and Voila - the touchscreen began to work and the touchscreen shows up in "Human Interface Devices" like it was supposed to.
I wanted to share this with you folks at HP, and special thanks to zoey7886.
All the best!
