Hi everyone,
I have a question regarding a Microsoft Office license that came pre-installed with my HP device. I currently have two Office licenses—Office 2019 (bundled with the HP device) and Office 2021—both linked to the same Microsoft account.
Having both licenses under one account has become inconvenient, especially since I’d prefer to keep my personal and family devices on separate Microsoft accounts due to privacy and security concerns. I’d like to transfer the Office 2019 license to a family member’s Microsoft account so they can use it independently on their own device.
I reached out to Microsoft Support, but they informed me that since the Office 2019 license was pre-installed and not purchased separately, the transfer would need to be handled by the device manufacturer—HP in this case.
Is there a way to initiate this transfer, or is it bound to the original Microsoft account permanently? Any help or guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Hi @Vedang24,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for the detailed question about the pre-installed Microsoft Office licenses on HP devices.
Unfortunately, pre-installed Office 2019 licenses (OEM licenses) that come bundled with HP laptops like your HP Pavilion Gaming 15-dk10000 (8VD47AV) are non-transferable. Once activated, they are permanently tied to the Microsoft account used during the initial activation and cannot be moved to another Microsoft account or device
Microsoft support is correct in saying that OEM licenses are managed by the device manufacturer. However, HP also confirms that once the license is activated, it is bound to the Microsoft account used and cannot be reassigned
Here are your options:
- Keep Office 2019 on the Original Account
Continue using Office 2019 under the original Microsoft account. You can still install Office 2021 on other devices using a different Microsoft account.
- Use Office 2021 for the Family Member
If Office 2021 is a retail license or part of Microsoft 365 Family, you can share it with your family member by adding them to your Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Factory Reset (Not Recommended for Transfer)
Even if you reset the laptop, the Office 2019 license will still be tied to the original Microsoft account and cannot be reassigned.
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
