HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j038tx Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I decided upon watching several videos on how the new Windows Precision Driver for touchpads are changing the game for Windows laptop touchpads. So I got it installed, restarted my computer and it clearly didn't work for my laptop. It was fluid but not tapping/clicking the touchpad did not give out any response (luckily I had a touchscreen).
So I tried to revert my Touchpad driver but that button on the Driver settings were dimmed (unable to click) so I tried to just press "Update Driver" and "Let me choose..." Then I selected the " Synaptics SMBus" driver, but after restarting it was jittery. So I restarted again, this time it was working but it had no clicking capabilities again and later on did not respond to even movement. I repeated the steps and the driver seemed to fail, so I tried both of the "Synaptics PS/2 Port Compatible TouchPad" But both were faulty upon restart. I also tried installing the "Synaptics SMBus" driver again and immediately uninstalled. And upon restarting no change. I have also tried Updating Windows. But upon that update it led me to the "PS/2 Compatible Mouse" driver. It is working, but I do not have any of the multi gesture capabilities and my clicking is limited to the bottom edge of the touchpad only + no scrolling. Lastly, checking on Settings Windows is stating that I am using a precision trackpad except I couldn't use any of the said precision trackpad abilities assuming due to my current driver.

How can I get my old touchpad driver back? I tried checking HP website but did not have driver support for my laptop's model for Windows 10 (I tried downloading synaptics from HP's site for Windows 8.1 for my laptop model and it is faulty).

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution,
I need a few more details:

  • Are you installing the drivers from the HP website or from the computer?

I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8.

BIOS default:

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Next, uninstall Touchpad device from device manager.

  1. Right-click on the Start or Windows icon and open the "Device Manager".
  2. Expand the "Mice and other pointing devices".
  3. Right-click on the "Synaptics TouchPad".
  4. Restart your PC for the change to take effect. After restarting. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.
  5. Do not perform any manual upgrades to the driver until it does automatically.

If that fails then perform Microsoft system restoreSystem Restore returns your computer to the files and settings from the restore point. Your personal files and documents are not affected: Here is a link to perform a system restorehttps://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03327545

  1. Shutdown the computer.
  2. Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
  3. Press F11 once for System Recovery.
  4. Choose the Keyboard Layout.
  5. Click on Troubleshoot.
  6. Go to Recovery Manager and click on System Restore.
  7. Choose a Restore point or a Restore date when the computer was working fine.
  8. Click on OK to initialize the System Restore.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thank you! I tried System Restore and got it all back, and just lost the most recent apps I downloaded.

Btw. I installed from the HP Website, and I had HP auto detect my laptop and found out that the drivers for my particular laptop is only for Windows 8.1 (I am running Windows 10) so whenever I download the synaptic drivers it would install but my touchpad would barely be usable, only having 50% of touchpad working (from center to left most of it only) whenever I use the synpatics from the website.

I don't know much about computer softwares, but maybe you guys can update every laptop's software for the latest Windows for full compatibility of softwares.

Btw. This Forum is so good, having HP employees reply after a couple of days. Thank you! HP is now my favorite brand next to Dell's support!
