I’m trying to change the apps from omen and myHP on my f12 programmable key to other ones. I have downloaded the HP Programmable Key app, but when i try to add a launch application function, it says “could not fetch installed application list. Please make sure Hotkey Service is running or contact System Administrator”
i have checked and HP Hotkey Service is running on task manager, and my account is the administrator, yet for some reason i cannot launch the app as admin, like much of the advice suggests. I just want my hp programmable key to be able to launch apps - not omen/myHP.

Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're having a frustrating experience with the HP Programmable Key app. Here are some steps to help troubleshoot the issue:
Check Hotkey Service:
- Even if it appears to be running, try restarting the HP Hotkey Service:
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find HP Hotkey Service in the list, right-click it, and choose Restart.
Reinstall the HP Programmable Key App:
- Uninstall the HP Programmable Key app from your system.
- Download the latest version from the HP website and reinstall it. This can help resolve any issues with the installation.
Run as Administrator:
- Although you mentioned it doesn’t allow launching as admin, try right-clicking the HP Programmable Key app icon and selecting Run as administrator again after a fresh install.
Check for Windows Updates:
- Ensure that your Windows operating system is up to date, as updates can sometimes resolve compatibility issues.
Check Installed Apps:
- Ensure that the applications you want to launch are properly installed on your system. If they’re portable or not installed through standard methods, they might not appear in the app list.
Verify User Account Control (UAC) Settings:
- Sometimes, UAC settings can interfere. You can try lowering the UAC settings temporarily to see if it helps. Search for "UAC" in the Windows search bar and adjust the slider to a lower setting.
Event Viewer:
- If you’re still encountering issues, check the Event Viewer for any error messages related to the HP Programmable Key app or the Hotkey Service. This might provide clues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
