HP ENVY 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-ch1000 (436W9AV)

Hi,

I just reinstalled Windows from the local drive on a HP ENVY Laptop 17-ch1010nb (5Z8S0EA). But I'm having trouble figuring out the correct keyboard layout of this machine. It's a QWERTY-ANSI format with special characters as on a belgian AZERTY keyboard. No layout in Windows seems to match this.

Here's a picture :

Any suggestion that might lead me to the correct layout, is greatly appreciated!
Best regards,
Pascal

Hi @pascal875765,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a unique or non-standard keyboard layout. From your description, it seems like you have a keyboard that combines elements of both QWERTY (ANSI) and Belgian AZERTY layouts. Let's break down the steps to help you determine and configure the correct keyboard layout:

Steps to Determine and Configure Keyboard Layout

Identify Key Characters

  • Compare the characters and their positions on your keyboard with the standard QWERTY (ANSI) and Belgian AZERTY layouts.
  • Look at special characters and their placement. This will help identify any deviations from standard layouts.

Check Default Layouts

  • Windows Settings:
    • Go to Settings > Time & language > Language.
    • Click on your language (e.g., English or Dutch) and select Options.
    • Under Keyboards, check which layouts are installed. You can add a new keyboard layout if needed.
  • On-Screen Keyboard:
    • Open the on-screen keyboard by searching for “On-Screen Keyboard” in the Start menu.
    • Use the on-screen keyboard to compare characters and symbols with your physical keyboard.

Test Common Layouts

  • Belgian Keyboard Layout: If the keyboard has elements of the Belgian layout, you might try adding it:
    • Go to Settings > Time & language > Language > Add a language.
    • Search for Dutch (Belgium) or French (Belgium) and add it.
    • Check if the layout matches the keyboard's special characters.
  • US Keyboard Layout: Sometimes, keyboards are configured in a default layout like US English. Verify if the US keyboard layout fits your needs:
    • Go to Settings > Time & language > Language > Add a language.
    • Search for English (United States) and add it.

Custom Keyboard Layout

  • If no standard layout matches, you can use tools to create a custom layout.
  • Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (MKLC):

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel,

thanks for your reply but this sounds a lot like the response that ChatGPT gave me.

So, am I to conlude by your answer, that nobody at HP knows, how the keyboards on their own notebooks are configured?

And if a custom layout through MKLC is necessary, why hasn't this been included in the local image for windows re-installation? After all, HP managed to include about a 1000 Bloatware tools in this image.

Thanks,

best regards,

Hi @pascal875765,

I understand your concern. However, the steps remain the same, so you might have got the same steps in chapGpt.
