My HP Notebook is low on storage space and I am trying to use a USB external storage drive with 108.G of free space to install update. It keeps telling me to free up space on the hard drive to download and install the update but I want to use the external USB. Why won't it let me do that, it asks if I want to use a USB drive but it won't down load . What can I do?

If you're trying to use Windows Update to do this on a PC that has limited storage -- that is a serious mistake -- and typical Windows Version upgrades want to download 4GB or more, and there is no way your PC has enough room to store that and still do the upgrade.

First thing you should so is follow the instructions below to free up as much disk space as you can ...

Also, the community Win10 Forums has the following suggestions:

In addition, I have found the utility Cleanmgr+ to have LOTS of options for removing Windows junk, including log files. I use it practically every day. You can get it from here: https://www.getclone.app/download/category/11-cleanmgr
Also, there is a freeware app known as Wise Disk Cleaner. I use it every day to get rid of junk files: https://www.wisecleaner.com/wise-disk-cleaner.html

After you have done that, we need to know WHAT you are trying to do -- run a Windows Update for a weekly update, or upgrading to version 1909. We need some details to provide you assistance.
