Hi @Manyo,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like the USB port on your HP Pavilion DV6 is providing power to your external hard drive, but it isn't recognizing the drive properly. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot this issue.
Try Different USB Ports
- Switch ports: If you have multiple USB ports, try plugging the external hard drive into another port (especially one on the right side of the laptop).
- Try another device: Plug in a different USB device (such as a flash drive) to see if the port works for other devices.
Check Device Manager
- Open Device Manager: Press Windows + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
- Look for errors: Check under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" for any yellow triangles, indicating a driver or hardware issue.
- If you see any, right-click and try updating or reinstalling the driver.
- Check for hidden devices: Click "View" and then "Show hidden devices" to see if the external hard drive is listed.
Power Management Settings
- Sometimes Windows manages the power for USB ports, disabling them when idle.
- Disable power management: In Device Manager, right-click on each USB Root Hub, click "Properties," go to the "Power Management" tab, and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
Reinstall or Update USB Drivers
- Go back to Device Manager, expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers," and uninstall the USB drivers by right-clicking and selecting "Uninstall" on each.
- Restart the computer, and Windows should automatically reinstall the drivers.
Test the External Hard Drive on Another Computer
- To rule out issues with the hard drive itself, try connecting it to another computer and see if it is recognized.
Update Chipset Drivers
- Visit HP's support site for your Pavilion DV6 and download the latest chipset and USB drivers for Windows 7. This might help if there’s a compatibility issue or if drivers are outdated.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
