HP spectre 13-af005nd
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Dear all,

The SSD of my laptop seems to be slow. I would like to install this update to see if that fixes the problem (https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-spectre-13-af000-laptop-pc-series/1677...)

The release notes are not very clear about the procedure:

1. Download the file by clicking the Download or Obtain Software button and
saving the file to a folder on your hard drive (make a note of the folder where
the downloaded file is saved).

2. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions. NOTE:
The default directory location is C:\SWSetup\SP85560.

3. Copy all the files from the above softpaq directory to the root directory of a USB drive

4. Reboot the system using the USB drive to enter into UEFI shell

5. type "SSDUEFITool_1.0.1.101_HP_X64.efi" to execute the FW update process.

I created a bootable USB drive and tried to boot on it but I always get the message "Selected boot image does not authenticate".

Any ideas?

@Induna   Is right about that 840 Evo's numbers being way too hight to be Sata.

The Samsung is an 981M NVMe SSD, correct.  Samsung... link.

The read speeds are quite slow compared to what Samsung says they should potentially be.

I dont know why, it could be a physical issue with the way the motherboard is wired.

You can contact HP Support and get warranty help with this.

They will have better access to that models info than I do.

Usually when you run the downloaded file, it will unpack itself the the default location of (in your case) C:\SWSetup\SP85560, then continue to run and install the firmware. Nothing else is needed.

But if you need to boot from USB and get the message... "Selected boot image does not authenticate",

Go into the bios (F10 at startup) and turn off or disable Secure boot.

You may or may not have to also enable Legacy mode.

After the installation unpacks the files, nothing else happens. What I pasted in my post in the content of the readme.txt file that is in C:\SWSetup\SP85560 .

I tried to disable SecureBoot , then also tried with legacy boot but it still does not work. I created the bootable usb drive with rufus, maybe that's the problem?

Actually you shouldn't have to run a USB live boot to update the firmware. According to the html file...

TITLE: Intel Solid State Drive (SSD) Firmware Update

VERSION: HP03 REV: A PASS: 1
DESCRIPTION:
This package provides a tool that will run in Windows to update the Intel Solid
State Drive (SSD) Firmware.

Can you navigate to C:\SWSetup\sp85560 and run the exe file from there?

You can use a tool like HWinfo to see what version of the firmware is installed on that drive...

Example of my Samsung SSD:

There is no executable in the folder:

Here is the drive information:

The PC is new, I did all the updates via the HP assistant, and then the windows 1803 update. This one took after download 1.5 hour or so.

Userbenchmark says:bench.PNG

Well I guess this is what I get for not asking up front.

You pointed to intel firmware for Intel SSD's.

IF you open the release notes on that download, it explains.

You have a Samsung SSD. This firmware is not needed.

Ah right I back not seen it. Thank you for looking into this.
I wonder what I can do about the slow performance of the SSD. On my previous laptop I had a Samsung 840 EVO and it was much faster. Should I contact the HP support?
HP Recommended

Tell me first, what is slow about it?

What are you doing that is slow to respond exactly?

HP Recommended

Well it is slower at startup, and the windows 1803 update took a very long time. I just ran a benchmark on both PCs:

The bench mark numbers on the Evo 840 must be incorrect. It is a SATA 3 SSD, and is only capable of 550 mB/s at most. I have no idea why your numbers are so elevated, higher in fact than any NVME drive I have ever seen. Do an empiracal test and copy several gigabytes of files to the drives and see how long it takes.
