I have an older Chromebook (S/N edited) I am on version 126.0.6478.222 Model # 14-CA061DX. Is there a more current version that I can download? The system seems to be slowing down and some sites that I regularly visit are no longer accessible.

Hi @Jimmyjoe1245

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Your HP Chromebook 14-ca061dx is currently on ChromeOS version 126.0.6478.222. This is the latest stable release available for ChromeOS devices at present, so there isn’t a newer version you can manually download.

If updates are available, they are delivered automatically through Google’s update system.

Why you’re seeing slowdown and site issues

  • Automatic updates: Chromebooks receive updates directly from Google. If your device is still within its Auto Update Expiration (AUE) period, it will continue to get new versions automatically.
  • Performance impact: Over time, cached files, extensions, and background apps can slow down performance even if the OS is up to date.
  • Site compatibility: Some websites may require newer browser features. If your Chromebook has reached its AUE date, it will no longer receive updates, which can cause certain sites to stop working.

Steps to check and update

  1. On your Chromebook, click the time in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. In the left panel, choose About ChromeOS.
  4. Select Check for updates.
    • If an update is available, it will download and install automatically.
    • Restart the Chromebook to apply the update.

Steps to improve performance

  • Clear browsing data: Open Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data, and remove cached files.
  • Disable unused extensions: In Chrome, type chrome://extensions in the address bar and turn off or remove extensions you don’t use.
  • Powerwash (factory reset): If performance remains sluggish, you can reset the Chromebook to its original state. This removes all local data but often restores speed.

Your Chromebook is already on the latest ChromeOS version (126). If updates stop appearing, it may mean the device has reached its Auto Update Expiration, in which case performance and site compatibility will gradually decline. In the meantime, clearing cache, disabling extensions, and performing a reset can help restore responsiveness.
