Hello.

Microsoft has ended the free update offer to Windows 10 last year. Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 is not eligible for an update any more.

You can still update to Windows 10 by downloading the Windows 10 installation media and starting the setup program from it - but you also need to obtain a Windows 10 license with a valid 25 character key code. If your current Windows is 32-bit, download the 32-bit installation media, otherwise it is the 64-bit media you need. Check whether your Windows is 32 / 64 bit in Control Panel -> System and Security -> System.

Your laptop was a low power model when it came out 10 years ago, and the 2GB memory is integrated into the system board and is not upgradeable. 2GB is very little these days, and is the bare minimum for 64-bit Windows 10.

Your laptop came with a mechanical hard drive. Replacing the hard drive with a modern SSD is an option and will make the laptop much faster in everyday use. Also, if you are already memory constrained, the SSD will speed up memory swap operations where Windows uses the storage for memory extension when system memory is depleted. Replacing the hard drive will require some disassembly and you would also need to transfer all your data from your hard drive into it.

Your laptop CPU is a very low power model and cannot be replaced. Its 2 processing cores will still be there to slow your work down and the SSD replacement will not speed up e.g. web browsing. 10 years ago web pages were much simpler and required less processing than today.

All in all, my recommendation would be to consider a new laptop. For the price of a new SSD and the Win10 license you are already halfway there for a new cheap laptop or perhaps a used business class laptop.
