Hi:
Unfortunately, HP only has the maintenance and service guide for the older model series on your notebook's support page, so most of the info other than how to take the notebook apart would be out of date for your notebook.

The manual shows gen 4 SSD's are supported, but the secondary slot is Gen 3.
You can read through this discussion on a similar model sold in Portugal where someone has done a great job letting you know what upgrades you can perform on the 16-d1xxx model series:

Thanks. I reviewed the post. Looks like it has dual M2 SSD slots. But customer service confused me.
Customer service says:
Kadir, the unit in question support 1 M.2 SSD up to 1TB and 1 2.5" SATA SSD up to 1TB. So it supports 2 storage options that are 1 M.2 slot and one 2.5" SATA SSD slot
which one is correct? 🙂

You're very welcome.
There is no option to install a 2.5" drive.
Here is the link to the service manual for the older 16-d0000 model series.
See chapter 1 for the supported drive types. No 2.5" drives are available.
Maintenance and Service Guide (hp.com)
There are two M.2 slots.
The primary slot supports PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD's up to 1 TB, and the secondary slot is PCIe Gen 3 and should also be able to support a NVMe SSD up to 1 TB.
If you look at the crucial memory/SSD report for the 16-d1xxx model series, they indicate that NVMe SSDs up to 4 TB are supported.
