HP Pavilion - 15-cw0998nl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

my new Pavillion with Windows 10 Home - does not restore system settings .

the loptop came with System restore settings not activated ( blame to Microsoft disabling this service by default ), and I actived it manually enabling the services .

with Powershell.  "PS C:> Enable-ComputerRestore  "C:\""

and then I turned System recovery on for C:\ ( where the OS is installed ) .

The System Recovery was activated so I created a checkpoint ,

However I tried to restore, but the restore didnt work , as I've got the message the regisrtry settings to be restored , but the process did not stop .  I tried several times, and I left th eprocess running for hours, but the process was running withut stopping .

I then checked and I started all the relevant services I think are required :

Virtual Disk - Disco Virtuale
Volume Shadow Copy
Task Scheduler
Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider Service
System Restore Service

but even if all the services are up and running, the System recovery process still take a lot of hours to run, and never ends successfully .

I fully restored the system trough HP recovery , but still the System Recovery keep running for hours .

There must be some WIndows 10 Home configuration or service missing .

Can you help on this ?

Is there any complete list of requirements for checking System Recover to be fully enabled ?

Thanks in advance

Hey there! @Francesco42, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you have issues performing a system restore on your PC.

Don't worry I will try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?

Was there any recent windows update done on your PC?

Excellent description and a great diagnosis done. It is greatly appreciated.

Try the steps recommended below.

If System Restore taking forever Windows 10 issue happens, it is likely that certain files get damaged.

Here, run System File Check to scan Windows and check if it helps.

Enter WinRE by using an installation media, just like the way 1 shows.
Then, navigate to Choose an option > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt.
Choose an account and enter the password.
Type sfc /scannow in the pop-out window and press Enter to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows 10.

Then, make a System Restore again to see whether it is stuck on restoring files or initializing.

Also, Try running a system diagnostics on your PC and check if the hardware components on your PC are functioning correctly.

Refer this article to know more information about running system diagnostics on your PC.

If the diagnostics test passes try performing a complete system reset on your PC from the recovery partition.

the compute is new , with a clean installation , nothing else was installed .

I already tested the rest from a recovery partition, but it didn't work .

I will try the sfc /scannow , and I will let you know .

In reality  , I suggest HP to install the WIN 10 systems with System restore enabled .

I was planning to buy a new HP laptop, but I now fear to do this .

@Francesco42, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appreciate your efforts for writing back to us.

I understand your concern and situation.

But the option is disabled by default on all the windows10 PC from Microsoft.

Also, as they want to promote the system reset which restores the OS without affecting the files. So system restore is disabled by default.

However, you can try the SFC steps and check if it helps.

If the issue still persists try performing a recovery using a set of recovery kit.

If you don't have a set of recovery kit. I will share you few details through a private message about the service options for your laptop.

Please watch your inbox for more information.

Hope this helps!

Take Care! 🙂

If the issue still persists after performing a system reset the only option is to perform a system recovery using the recovery kit.

If you don't have a set of recovery kit, Please follow the steps suggested my previous post and order a set of recovery kit for your PC.

Hi,

is the recovery kit free of charge ?

Regards

@Francesco42, Thanks for your response again.

As you have failed to create the recovery kit during the initial setup of your PC.

You would have to bare the chares to order the recovery kit from HP.

Also, if your PC is still under warranty you can ask for some waivers.

Hope this answers your query!

Take Care! 🙂
