I found the download for power driver under "software system management" at bottom, changed to Win10 

 


https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-elitebook-840-g2-notebook-pc .... etc. (added laptop info)

 

 

simply used "Repair"

B.t.w., the issue which caused me to suspect corruption seems to be gone > even with an external fan blowing along the underside cooling intake from behind the laptop and even after using a can of liquid gas designed especially intended for this purpose to clear the fan from dust, the laptop was getting hot!
Further, the gas had briefly spun the fan ca. 10,000 RPM , so I assume dust-free. However, I was concerned since obviously the fan was going in reverse (outside flow going in) but I researched and found that apparently laptops use brushless motors and only brushed motors get ruined spinning backwards: I.e., brushed motors are sold in two different rotation variants.
