Compatible pens:
HP MPP 2 G1 Tilt Pen (natural silver) N44378-001
HP MPP 2 G1 Tilt Pen (nightfall black) N54711-001
The Pen Control application indicates it is incompatible with the pen,
and -
True - You cannot use it to customize the buttons on the pen.

Yeah, but - Why?
Perhaps the pen internal mechanics are different or the app simply refuses to accept the pen as compatible with the application.
Unfortunately, regardless of the reason, if the application does not work with this pen, there is no way to force it to do so.
How?
Not sure whether you can customize the buttons on this pen model --
I don't see anything obvious.
If there is something hidden in one or more of the HP Drivers or Software,
If you have not done so,
Updating the drivers that need it might make a difference.
Note that this idea is weak - there is not evidence that anything will change with the pen.
The HP Pen Control will not suddenly become compatible.
Beware -- The BIOS update is best done by itself and only when you have your system backups current and completed.
Why? BIOS updates almost always work - unless they do not. Do not be the one who loses everything because you don't have backups of your data stored where you can get to it if the computer becomes unavailable.
