HP Pavilion dv7-3162nr Entertainment Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Hello experts,

I have a Pavilion dv7-3162nr that I've recently done a clean install upgrade to windows 10 32-bit on it. Everything is working great except for the infrared remote. I have installed the infrared application from windows optional features, I've had the computer auto detected on HP support and downloaded and installed the ENE CIR receiver, JMicron and Realtek card reader drivers and I went through the device manager and checked that all the drivers were up to date. Everything that I can think of for the IR system looks to be there such as ENE CIR, Microsoft eHome infrared transceiver, Microsoft eHome MCIR keyboard, Microsoft eHome remote control keyboard keys and consumer IR devices, although the device manager does say there's one unknown device. I have put a new battery in the remote and have checked with a camera that the remotes IR diode is flashing. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated as this is going to be my daughter's first computer as a Christmas present.

Thanks guys!

Devin

Hi @DNE63,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you've covered many of the basic troubleshooting steps, but let's try a few more things to see if we can get the infrared remote working on your Pavilion dv7-3162nr.

Check for the Unknown Device:

  • In the Device Manager, right-click on the unknown device and select "Properties."
  • Go to the "Details" tab, and from the drop-down menu, select "Hardware IDs."
  • Take note of the Hardware IDs.
  • Use a search engine to look up the Hardware IDs to identify the device. This can help you find the correct driver.

Install the Correct Driver:

  • Visit the HP support website and make sure you've downloaded the latest drivers for your laptop model.
  • Manually install the driver for the unknown device using the Hardware IDs you obtained.

BIOS/UEFI Update:

  • Check if there's a BIOS/UEFI update available for your laptop on the HP support website. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve hardware compatibility issues.

Check Infrared Settings:

  • Press the Windows key + I to open Settings, then go to "Devices" and "Infrared."
  • Ensure that the "Let me use my remote to control my PC" option is enabled.

Reinstall Infrared Drivers:

  • Uninstall the Infrared-related drivers from the Device Manager.
  • Reboot your computer.
  • After the reboot, Windows should automatically reinstall the drivers. Check if the remote works now.

Compatibility Mode:

  • Right-click on the installer for the Infrared drivers.
  • Select "Properties" and go to the "Compatibility" tab.
  • Check the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and choose an older version of Windows (e.g., Windows 7 or Windows 8).
  • Run the installer.

Third-Party Software:

  • Consider trying third-party software designed for managing and configuring infrared remotes. Examples include EventGhost or HIP (Home InfraRed Control).

System Restore:

  • If the issue started after a recent change or update, consider using System Restore to revert your system to a previous state.

Remember to create a backup before making significant changes to your system. I hope one of these suggestions helps resolve the issue!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I've searched the hardware ID and found that it's for the HP 3D drive guard, which makes sense the driver's wouldn't be automatically installed since I've installed a SSD in it instead of a HDD.

I did the BIOS update but with no luck. I tried the UEFI update but returns me with the error message "cannot be installed on systems with .Net Framework version smaller than 2.0". I've checked with command prompt and it says the version is 4.8.09037.

Infrared doesn't show up inside of my devices but it does have infrared inside control panel > hardware and sound.

I uninstalled all related IR drivers and rebooted and still doesn't work.

I tried the compatibility set on windows 7 and no change, but my windows update failed so I've uninstalled again and rebooted. I haven't tried installing the UEFI update with the compatibility set on windows 7.

Don't know if it has anything to do with it but the only OS I can select on HP support is windows 7 when downloading drivers and I'm running 10 version 22h2 on it. I extremely appreciate you messaging me about this issue and thank you for your time!
