HP Notebook 15s-fq1514na

Hi community,

I have a HP Notebook 15s-fq1514na, that came with Windows 10 and recently was upgraded to Windows 11. Inevitably the integrated touchpad has now stopped working.

The first thing I have noticed is that in settings, there are no touchpad settings options at all within Windows

In Device Manager under Human Interface devices - I have a I2C HID Device error with a yellow triangle

Under Mice and other pointing devices I have no options other than the portable USB mouse I have plugged in

This is what I have tried to date. I tried uninstalling the I2C HID Device, and then rebooting to see if it would choose correct driver. I have gone through multiple ways of doing this but the error remains

I have rollbacked to Windows 10 and then re did the whole upgrade, the error remains

I did a diagnostics test on the laptop and the touchpad works as expected. So this feels like a driver/windows issue

Does anyone have a step by step way of fixing this issue please, 3 days in it is driving me mad.

@Rav_469, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

You're absolutely right, this issue is most likely driver-related, especially since the touchpad works in diagnostics. Let's walk through a step-by-step fix to restore your touchpad functionality on Windows 11.

Confirm Windows Updates Are Fully Installed

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
  • Install all pending updates, including optional ones (especially under Advanced options > Optional updates).

Uninstall Faulty I2C HID Device

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Human Interface Devices.
  • Right-click the I2C HID Device with the yellow triangle and choose Uninstall device.
  • Check Delete the driver software for this device if available.
  • Restart your PC.

Install HP OEM Touchpad Driver

HP uses Synaptics or ELAN drivers for this model. Windows 11 may not auto-install the correct one.

Visit the official HP driver page for your model:
Official HP® Support

Download and install:

  • Synaptics Touchpad Driver (or ELAN if listed)
  • Intel Serial IO Driver – this is critical for I2C devices to function properly.

Run HP Support Assistant

Enable Touchpad in BIOS (if disabled)

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc or F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  • Navigate to Advanced > Built-in Device Options.
  • Ensure Touchpad is set to Enabled.
  • Save and exit.

Check Touchpad Settings in Windows

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Touchpad.
  • If the section is still missing, try creating a new local user account and check if it appears there, this can help rule out profile corruption.

Additional Tips

  • If the issue persists, try installing the Windows 10 touchpad driver in compatibility mode:
    • Right-click the installer > Properties > Compatibility tab > Run as Windows 10.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
