@Ali_3, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Check for Updates

Go to Settings > About Chrome OS and click Check for updates. If it doesn't update, your device might be at the end of its update period.

Switch to the Stable Channel

You’re on the Dev Channel, which might be causing problems. To switch to a more stable version:

Go to Settings > About Chrome OS > Change Channel.

Select Stable and restart.

Force Update

Press Ctrl + Alt + T to open the crosh terminal and type:

update_engine_client --update

Hit Enter to force an update.

Factory Reset (Powerwash)

If the above steps don’t work, you can reset your Chromebook (this erases everything, so back up data first):

Go to Settings > Advanced > Reset Settings > Powerwash > Restart.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks so much for the feedback! But I would like to know if there is another way to open the crosh terminal. As i explained sadly my laptop is very old and overtime my t button has stopped working. If there is any way around it that would help a lot, thanks so much.

Thanks for replying.

My apologies for the delayed response.

I can imagine how inconvenient it feels when a single key stops working and blocks you from opening the crash terminal, especially since you’re trying to breathe new life into an older Chromebook.

You’ve already done a great job narrowing down the issue to the missing “T” key, so let’s look at practical ways around it.

Here are some options you can try:

Use the On‑Screen Keyboard

  • Go to Settings > Advanced > Accessibility > Manage accessibility features.
  • Turn on “Enable on‑screen keyboard.”
  • Once enabled, press Ctrl + Alt on your physical keyboard, then click “T” on the on‑screen keyboard. This will open crash without needing the physical key.

Copy and Paste the Command

  • If you can open crash once using the on‑screen keyboard, you don’t need to type “T” again.
  • Copy the command update_engine_client --update from a text file or webpage and paste it directly into crash.

External Keyboard

  • Plug in a USB or Bluetooth keyboard.
  • Use Ctrl + Alt + T on the external keyboard to open crash. This bypasses the broken key on your Chromebook.

Channel Switching Without Crash

  • You can also change update channels without crash:
    • Go to Settings > About Chrome OS > Additional details > Change channel.
    • Select “Stable” and restart.
  • This sometimes triggers updates without needing the crash terminal.

Here’s a helpful Google guide on using accessibility features, including the on‑screen keyboard:
Use the On‑Screen Keyboard on Chromebooks
