Hello, The built-in HP True Vision 5MP Camera and IR camera for Windows Hello have stopped working on my laptop. The Device Manager shows the camera as “working properly,” but the Camera app, Zoom, and Windows Hello all report no camera detected. HP Diagnostics lists the camera but always crashes when running the Webcam Test.

I have already reinstalled drivers, tried the Microsoft generic driver, reset BIOS, installed HP Hotkey Support, and checked Windows permissions and the issue persists.

I'm at a loss now and i'm to bring it in when i come to the US in September. is it something that can be worked on in a few days cos i only have 5 days in NY

@blu313, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Built-in HP Camera Issues!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If your built-in HP True Vision 5MP Camera and IR camera for Windows Hello have stopped working, there are several troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve the issue:

Verify Webcam Privacy Settings:

  • Check if your HP notebook has a webcam privacy switch or shutter key. Make sure the webcam is turned on.
  • Slide the webcam privacy switch away from the icon to turn the webcam on.
Locating the webcam privacy switch on the side of the computer

Device Manager Checks:

  • In Device Manager, ensure that the camera is listed under Imaging devices.
  • If not listed, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
    Scan for hardware changes

Update or Reinstall Camera Drivers:

  • Uninstall the IR camera driver in Device Manager and download the latest driver from HP Customer Support.

Check App Permissions:

  • Ensure apps are allowed to access the camera. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and switch access to On for your apps.

Switch to UVC Driver:

  • Switch to the standard USB Video Class (UVC) driver in Device Manager if the current driver isn’t functioning as expected.

Run Windows System Restore:

  • If the camera was previously working, consider using Microsoft System Restore to revert to a date when it functioned correctly.

Test with HP Diagnostics:

  • Run the Webcam Connection Test in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics if possible, and verify no internal disconnection issues.

Replace the Webcam (if persistent issues):

  • If all else fails and the issue is not resolved, consider ordering a replacement webcam from HP.

 Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
