@Dogcatt Welcome to HP Community!

Here's all you need to know about turning on the backligth, if the device has one:

Turn on or off the backlight

If your notebook computer has a backlit keyboard, press the F5 or F4 (some models) key on the keyboard to turn the light on or off. It might be necessary to press the fn (function) key at the same time.

If the backlight icon  is not on the F5 key, look for the backlit keyboard key on the row of function keys.

Thanks for the help, come to find out that the Ebay seller I bought the refurbished product from listed it wrong.

Do you know if the keyboard in this model can be replaced with a lighted on?

Thanks again for trying to help.

@wwrafter7 I'm afraid as per HP part replacements policy you can only replace the parts with the same components shipped with the PC, although, if you wish to customize your device and try other things, you may do so at your own discretion.

I hope that answers your query!

Turns out the seller didn't proof his add and it  didn't have a back light. He is suppose to give me $25 back.  I also found out from Dragon-Fur that I can replace the keyboard with a back lit one and ordered one on Ebay, so problem solved.

Thanks for trying to help.

You can delete Dogcatt and keep me under wwrafter7 or tell me how to do it.

Thank you the new keyboard should fix the problem and it  has the icon on the F5 key.

Thanks again
