hello so i tried to fix my laptop fan speed, tho there is a problem. any solution I tried does not work. The fan speed is too slow that i cant even hear it. i tried to download third party apps like "notebook fancontrol" and etc. none of them work, even tho i tried doing custom profiles and etc. now i tried official hp apps. i tried hp diagnostics, i picked a another thermal profile but didnt work. i downloaded hp command centre (the latest version) it does not work. i even downloaded hp coolsense, still does not work. i see that there is no solution online. also the BIOS there is no advanced option even tho i tried to do the f9 then ctrl f1 or f10 and then going to bios setup. it doesnt work there is no advanced options. i would really apprieciate if there is any fix for this. also i did check the fans cleaned them and put new thermal paste.

Hi @Zuya,

Thank you for the response.

I understand your laptop is overheating even when idle, and you’re unable to control the fan speed using BIOS, HP utilities, or third-party apps. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this and stabilize the temperature and fan behavior.

a. Check for Background Processes Causing High CPU Usage

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.

Under the Processes tab, check if anything is using high CPU, GPU, or Memory while idle.

End unnecessary tasks and uninstall apps that auto-start and consume resources in the background.

b. Disable Startup Programs

In Task Manager, go to the Startup tab.

Disable apps you don’t need to launch on startup (e.g., Discord, Steam, Adobe, etc.).

Restart your laptop and monitor temperatures again.

c. Adjust Windows Power & Cooling Settings

Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Change Plan Settings → Change Advanced Power Settings.

Expand Processor Power Management.

Set Minimum Processor State to 5–10% on battery and 10–20% when plugged in.

Set Maximum Processor State to 90–95% (this prevents unnecessary boosting and reduces heat).

Expand System Cooling Policy → set both Plugged in and On battery to Active (this makes fans spin earlier to cool system).

d. Update BIOS, Chipset, and Thermal Drivers

Open HP Support Assistant (or download from HP’s official page).

Install updates for BIOS, Chipset, and Thermal Framework drivers.

Restart and test the fan behavior again.

e. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics – Fan & Thermal Test

Turn off the laptop completely.

Power it on and immediately press Esc, then press F2 for System Diagnostics.

Go to Component Tests → Thermal or Fan Test.

This will check if the fan is responding correctly. If it fails, the fan controller may not be functioning properly.

I hope this helps.

i tried all above. i installed the thermal drrivers because i never did that. But it still didnt work. i already tried everything u said otherwise. Also I ensure that i have opened my laptop and the fans are working. When i updated BIOS the fan speed went max and my laptop wasnt overheating. (that was while updating BIOS not on the operating system). i truly dont know what to do

Hi @Zuya,

Thank you for the update, and I appreciate you confirming everything you’ve tried so far.

Since the fans spin normally during the BIOS update process (which means the hardware and fan motors are working fine), but do not respond properly within Windows—even after installing thermal drivers, updating BIOS, and checking cooling settings—this points to a possible firmware or embedded controller issue rather than a Windows/software configuration problem.

At this stage, please try the following advanced steps:

Perform an EC (Embedded Controller) Reset

This helps recalibrate the fan control system.

Shut down the laptop completely.

Disconnect the charger and all peripherals.

Press and hold the Power button for 15–20 seconds.

Reconnect the charger and turn the laptop on.

Check if the fans respond better after booting into Windows.

Test Fan Behavior in BIOS (Without Windows Running)

Turn on the laptop and immediately press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.

Let the laptop sit idle in BIOS for 5–10 minutes.

If the fans speed up normally or temperatures stay stable inside BIOS, the issue is happening only inside Windows.

If it overheats even in BIOS, it’s likely a hardware/firmware issue → service is required.

Reinstall HP System Management Controller / Thermal Framework

Go to Device Manager > System Devices.

Right-click and uninstall (if available):

Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework

HP System Event Utility / System Management Controller

Restart the laptop → Windows will reinstall them automatically.

Recheck fan behavior.

I hope this helps.
