HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-fd1000 (917T9AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

To optimise battery life a charge between 20 to 80% is  preferred. I can't find where to set this up in settings, so the charger cuts out at 80% , and also that I receive a notification when it reaches 20%.

@miker30957, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

You're absolutely right keeping your battery charge between 20% and 80% is a good practice to extend overall battery health.

Currently, HP laptops like your HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-fd1000 (917T9AV) running Windows 11 do not have a built-in option in Windows or HP software to automatically stop charging at 80% or send custom low battery alerts at 20%. However, here are your options:

HP Battery Health Manager (in BIOS settings)

Some HP consumer laptops come with a BIOS feature called Battery Health Manager, which helps manage battery charging behavior.

Steps to check:

  • Shut down the laptop completely.
  • Press F10 repeatedly when turning it on to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Navigate to Advanced > Power Management Options or similar.
  • Look for Battery Health Manager.
  • If available, set it to "Maximize my battery health".
  • This usually limits charge to around 80%–90% to preserve battery longevity.
  • Press F10 to Save and Exit.

Set Low Battery Notification at 20%

You can configure Windows to warn you at 20% battery:

Steps:

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & battery.
  • Click Battery saver > Battery saver settings.
  • Set the "Lower battery level" to 20%.
  • Toggle "Turn battery saver on automatically at" to 20%.
  • Enable "Lower screen brightness when using battery saver" for extra savings.
  • This won't stop charging at 80%, but it ensures you’re alerted when the battery drops below 20%.

Third-party tools (optional)

If you absolutely need a solution that cuts off charging at 80%, consider third-party software like:

Battery Limiter or Smarter Battery

These tools allow you to set custom upper/lower charge thresholds with alerts.

Be cautious with third-party tools—only download from trusted sources.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
