@KWojcik, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're having trouble waking your HP Notebook from standby mode, the keyboard and power button don’t respond, and only a hard reset works. Let’s work through this together.

Perform a Hard Reset (if not already done)

This helps clear any temporary hardware or firmware glitches.

  • Power off the notebook.
  • Disconnect all external devices (USBs, printers, etc.).
  • Unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then power on the notebook.

Update BIOS and Drivers

Outdated BIOS or chipset drivers can cause power management issues.

  • Visit the HP Support page.
  • Enter your notebook model number.
  • Download and install the latest BIOS, chipset, and keyboard drivers.

Adjust Power Settings

Incorrect power settings may prevent the system from waking properly.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  • Click Change plan settings next to your selected plan.
  • Click Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand Sleep > Allow hybrid sleep and set it to Off.
  • Expand Power buttons and lid > Lid close action and Power button action, and set them to Sleep or Do nothing as needed.
  • Click Apply and OK.

Check Device Manager for Keyboard Settings

Ensure the keyboard is allowed to wake the computer.

  • Press Windows + X > Device Manager.
  • Expand Keyboards, right-click your keyboard > Properties.
  • Go to the Power Management tab.
  • Check "Allow this device to wake the computer".
  • Click OK.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

This checks for hardware issues.

  • Turn off the notebook.
  • Turn it back on and immediately press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the Component Tests > Keyboard and Power tests.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
