The computer won't restart when I click on restart now for the update. Also, I have been trying to download visual studio code without success. I have turned off my mcafee virus protection and firewall and still wouldn't download.

Hi @allenswick013,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that your computer is not restarting properly after attempting updates and you are having trouble downloading software like Visual Studio Code, I would request you to please follow the steps:

Run Windows Update First

  • Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → Check for updates.
  • Install all pending Windows updates.
  • Restart manually (not through HP Virtual Assistant).
  • Sometimes HP updates depend on Windows updates being applied first.

Use Safe Restart

  • Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete → Power → Restart.
  • If restart fails, hold the power button for 10 seconds to force shutdown, then power back on.
  • This clears stuck update processes.

Hardware Check

  • Run diagnostics to check for potential hardware issues.
  • Use the pre-installed HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows.
  • If not installed, download it from HP Support.
  • Run a Fast Test and a System Extensive Test to identify any hardware issues.

BIOS Update

  • Keeping the BIOS updated can fix certain issues:
  • Open HP Support Assistant.
  • Go to the Updates section to find and install any available BIOS updates.

Install Visual Studio Code

  • Ensure the system is up-to-date and functioning normally before downloading new software.
  • Visit the Visual Studio Code website to download the latest version for your OS.

Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure

  • For Windows 11/10:
  • Search for and open "View advanced system settings."
  • In the Startup and Recovery section, select Settings.
  • Uncheck the box next to Automatically restart.
  • Click OK to save the changes.

Take care and have an amazing day!
