Hi @josh-solar,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Having issues with brightness control on your HP laptop can be frustrating, but let's try some steps to resolve this.

Restart Your Laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix software glitches causing the function keys to stop working. Restart your laptop and see if the function keys (fn + F9/F10) start functioning again.

Check Power Settings:

  • Right-click on the battery icon in the system tray (bottom right corner).
  • Select "Power Options."
  • Ensure you are on a balanced or high-performance plan, as some power-saving plans can limit brightness control options.

Update Drivers: Outdated or corrupt drivers can cause issues with function keys. To update them:

  • Go to the HP official website.
  • Navigate to the support section and find your laptop model.
  • Download and install the latest drivers for your laptop, especially the chipset and hotkey drivers.

BIOS Update:

  • Sometimes a BIOS update can resolve hardware-related issues. However, be cautious and follow HP's instructions carefully when updating BIOS.

Check Keyboard Settings:

  • Open the Device Manager (search for "Device Manager" in the Start menu).
  • Expand the "Keyboards" section.
  • Right-click on your keyboard device and select "Properties."
  • Go to the "Driver" tab and click "Update Driver." Follow the prompts to update the driver if an update is available.

Check for System Updates:

  • Ensure your Windows or operating system is up to date. Updates can sometimes fix bugs and improve system stability.

HP Hotkey Support (if available):

  • Some HP laptops have a specific software package called "HP Hotkey Support." Ensure it is installed and up to date from the HP support website.

Check for Physical Issues:

  • Ensure there are no physical obstructions or damage to the keyboard keys.

These steps should help in troubleshooting and hopefully resolving the issue with your brightness control function keys on your HP laptop.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
