The 'Tab' key triggers automatically either upon Windows startup (affecting the Windows taskbar) or when opening windows or browsers, resulting in continuous input and a blinking cursor within the browser's search bar. This is almost certainly a Windows 11 issue because the PC is new (only two months old), and because the problem does not occur within the Windows Settings menu.

The automatic typing issue persists even in safe mode. Furthermore, when typing at the command prompt during PC startup, the system repeatedly entered the letter 'z'. It seems highly unlikely that this is a hardware issue, given that there are times—such as right now, while I am writing this—when the problem does not occur. A mechanical issue would be constant, while a software issue is not necessarily continuous.

Why are neither HP nor Microsoft able to provide useful suggestions for resolving this issue, especially given that people on other forums are reporting similar problems? It is clear that this is an operating system issue. Formatting the PC or restoring it to factory settings is not the solution, as there is no guarantee that the problem won’t simply recur.

Thanks to anyone who would like to offer helpful suggestions

Hi @DDDJB

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern. Based on the behavior you described, especially the fact that:

  • The issue occurs in Windows startup areas and browsers.
  • The issue persists in Safe Mode.
  • The system repeatedly entered the letter "z" at startup command prompts.
  • The behavior is intermittent rather than constant.
  • The issue does not appear in some applications or at all times.

It is understandable why this may appear to be a Windows 11 issue. However, the detail that the system repeatedly entered a specific character ("z") during startup is important because it occurs before many Windows components are fully loaded. That means the source can be related to keyboard input itself, a connected input device, or firmware-level interpretation of keyboard signals, not only Windows.

I would suggest working through the following checks before considering any operating system recovery:

Disconnect all external input devices:

  • USB keyboards
  • Wireless keyboard receivers
  • USB hubs
  • Gaming controllers
  • External keypads

Run HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Power off the PC.
  • Power on and repeatedly tap F2.
  • Select Component Tests.
  • Run the Keyboard Test.

Check whether the issue occurs in the HP Hardware Diagnostics environment:

  • Move between menu options without touching the keyboard.
  • Watch for automatic navigation or selections.

Perform an Embedded Controller reset:

  • Shut down the PC.
  • Disconnect power.
  • If the battery is removable, disconnect it.
  • Hold the Power button for approximately 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect power and start the PC.

Update the BIOS to the latest version available for your HP model using HP Support Assistant or the support page for the device.

In Device Manager:

  • Expand Keyboards.
  • Uninstall the listed keyboard device(s).
  • Restart the PC and allow Windows to reinstall the drivers automatically.

If the system is a notebook, test with the built-in keyboard disabled temporarily (where supported) and an external USB keyboard connected. This can help isolate whether the internal keyboard matrix is generating intermittent signals.

One observation worth noting is that mechanical keyboard faults are not always constant. A key membrane, keyboard matrix circuit, contamination, or intermittent electrical contact can produce symptoms that appear and disappear, which can make the issue resemble a software problem.

Because the behavior was also observed at startup command prompts, I would focus first on ruling out keyboard hardware, firmware, and input-device interactions before concluding that Windows 11 is the sole cause.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
