Windows Security keeps alerting and blocking etd_smart_win_x64.exe from making changes to Protected Folder.

Is there an update to this file(s)?

Thanks

UPDATE: Don't want to reinstall the HP touchpad drivers (if that what this file is from) at HP Software and Drivers site  unless I have to, because they are from OS Version 1903 and I am on OS Version 22H2.

Hi @jetster123,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like etd_smart_win_x64.exe is associated with the HP One Device Platform, which is used by HP to manage certain device features like the touchpad or other device-specific utilities. Since it's being blocked by Windows Security, it's likely flagged because of its interaction with the Protected Folder or because of security concerns that arise with certain types of software making changes to sensitive parts of the system.

Regarding your questions:

  • Is there an update to this file? The file version you provided is from November 2024, which seems relatively recent. However, you are correct that the official drivers from HP Software and Drivers site may be older, specifically for OS Version 1903. For your version of Windows (22H2), you might not want to use drivers that are outdated.
  • Do you need to reinstall the drivers? It may not be necessary to reinstall the HP touchpad drivers from the HP website if you're concerned about the OS version mismatch. However, you can try checking for updates through HP Support Assistant or Windows Update to see if there are more recent drivers available. Sometimes, newer updates may be pushed directly by HP or Microsoft for compatibility with newer OS versions.

Here’s what you can try:

  • Check for driver updates in HP Support Assistant: This tool often has the most up-to-date drivers for your system, and it may automatically suggest updates for your OS version.
  • Allow etd_smart_win_x64.exe through Windows Security: If you trust the source and it is indeed from HP, you can add the file to the allowed list in Windows Security under Virus & Threat Protection > Manage Settings > Controlled Folder Access > Allow an app through Controlled Folder Access.
  • Update Windows and Device Drivers: Make sure both your Windows OS and all device drivers are fully up to date through Windows Update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Raj_05 https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/6061215

There are no Software & Drivers updates available in the HP Support Assistant.

There is a "HP Inc. - SoftwareComponent - 1.74.4065.0" update for optional Windows Driver updates. Do I install that to fix the problem?

There is also "HP Inc. - Firmware - 15.30.0.0" update for optional Windows  Driver updates.

There is also a "Synaptics Incorporated  - Biometric - 5.5.11.1093" update for optional Windows Drivers updates. Maybe that needs to be installed for Synaptics Touchpad?

How do I know for sure that the file can be trusted - "If you trust the source and it is indeed from HP".

Thanks for you help.

Hi @jetster123

Thank you for your response.

Please try these steps,

1. Verify the File Signature

To ensure that etd_smart_win_x64.exe is from HP and hasn’t been tampered with:

  • Right-click on etd_smart_win_x64.exe → PropertiesDigital Signatures.
  • If the signer is HP Inc. and the signature is valid, the file is genuine.

2. Temporarily Disable Windows Security to Test Execution

  • Go to Windows SecurityVirus & Threat Protection.
  • Under Virus & Threat Protection Settings, Turn off Real-time Protection temporarily.
  • Try running etd_smart_win_x64.exe to see if it gets blocked again.
  • If it runs successfully, add it as an exclusion in Windows Security.

3. Use Event Viewer for Detailed Errors

  • Go to Windows LogsApplication.
  • Look for errors related to etd_smart_win_x64.exe and note the error code.

4. Check for Hidden Blocked Applications

  • Open PowerShell as Administrator and run:
    "Get-AppLockerPolicy -Effective | Where-Object { $_.Path -match "etd_smart_win_x64.exe" }"
    • If the file is blocked by AppLocker, you may need to create an exception rule.

5. Manually Install the Latest Version

Since HP Support Assistant doesn't show an update, you can try:

  • Windows Optional Updates: Install the HP Inc. - SoftwareComponent - 1.74.4065.0 update and check if it resolves the issue.
  • Firmware Update (15.30.0.0): Only install this if your system firmware is outdated, as incorrect firmware updates can cause issues.
  • Check HP Website: Look for a standalone download of the HP One Device Platform or touchpad drivers.

6. Run HP Image Assistant (HPIA)

  • Download HP Image Assistant (HPIA) from the HP website.
  • Run it to analyze your system and recommend driver updates.

7. Perform a Clean Boot

  • Press Win + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  • Go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and click Disable all.
  • Restart your PC and try running etd_smart_win_x64.exe.

I hope this helps.
