Right now, your laptops is working.  There is always the risk, especially on older systems, that a bios upgrade leave you with a newer bios, but a system that no longer works.

I suspect the bios is not UEFI. due to its age.

 

Some HP motherboard made by Pegatron and Foxconn have bios MODs to use newer graphic cards.

A few BIOS'es can have missing microcode put back in or whitelists removed but it is not recommended. Check at the following sites.
