Hi @Tracey2032,

On HP laptops, the Fn key behavior cannot be changed through the Windows Registry Editor. This functionality is controlled at the BIOS/UEFI (firmware) level or by the keyboard controller, not by Windows itself.

How to Change Fn Key Behavior on HP Laptops

Check BIOS/UEFI Settings (Recommended):
Some HP models allow you to set whether the function keys perform their secondary actions (Search, Volume, Brightness, etc.) by default.

Steps:

  1. Restart the laptop.

  2. Press Esc repeatedly during startup to open the Startup Menu.

  3. Press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.

  4. Go to System Configuration.

  5. Look for Action Keys Mode or Function Key Behavior.

  6. Enable this option to use secondary functions without pressing Fn.

  7. Save changes and exit.

HP Support Software:
Certain HP models include tools such as HP Support Assistant, which may offer limited keyboard or function-key customization. It’s worth checking if this is available on your system.

Application-Specific Shortcuts:
While the Fn key cannot be remapped globally, some applications allow you to customize their own keyboard shortcuts as a workaround.

If none of these options are available, the behavior is likely a hardware limitation specific to the model.
