hello

so, I bought a PC laptop with a German keyboard configurationl.

On my currrent keyboard, however, the greater than sign (">") is positioned top left on the "L" key, the less than ("<") bottom left, and a vertical backwards slash on bottom right. So, total of 4 signs on one key. When I insert "Alt gr + L" I see on the screen "leistungsprotokolle start" or "leistungsprotokolle gespeichert". However I set my computer to English.

so

how can I insert the greater than sign and the less than sign with this keyboard.

thank you for yours answers

Hi @wero2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

On a German QWERTZ keyboard, the < and > symbols are usually found on the key to the right of the left Shift key—between Shift and Y (it might show <, >, and |).

Even if your system is set to English, if your keyboard hardware is German, Windows still interprets keystrokes based on the physical layout unless you change it.

To type:

  • < (less than): Just press that key (no Shift)
  • > (greater than): Press Shift + that key

If you’re seeing “Leistungsprotokolle gestartet” after AltGr + L, that’s a hotkey activating a system function, not typing a character. This is unrelated to the symbols.

Optional: Align Layout with Language

If you want your keyboard to behave exactly like an English layout:

  1. Go to Settings → Time & Language → Language
  2. Under Preferred languages, click English, then Options
  3. Under Keyboards, click Add a keyboard, then select United States (QWERTY)
  4. Remove the German layout if you no longer need it

Note: The physical key labels won't match if you switch to the English layout.

We hope this clears things up and gets you typing confidently again.
Is there anything else you'd like help with on your new laptop?

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello @VikramTheGreat ,

I saw and read your answer. But the main problem is that, I don´t have a separate key for this symbols on my keyboard. As I said the greater than and less than symbols are on the left side of L Key.

kind regards,

wero2
