I bought this laptop (i7-8750 H, 16 GB RAM, Intel UHD Graphics 630 & NVIDIA GTX 1050). Unfortunately, the performance is so bad I can barely use it for desktop tasks. That is, when I'm running it at 4k resolution.

 

Browser performance is especially bad. An example: Watching a 1080x60 Twitch stream in Microsoft Edge will put the Intel GPU at 100% and the Nvidia GPU at around 60%, when the OS is at 4k. What's curious is that this the problem is way worse when the video is on fullscreen. When I decrease the windows size by a lot (but still keep the stream quality at 1080x60), it will drop to around 30 % / 16% GPU usage, which makes me think it might be some weird hardware acceleration software issue / driver issue. Firefox does NOT perform better.

 

Windows 10 Pro is fully updated. I've already reinstalled the entire OS and even on a fresh reinstall, the problems persist. I have tried to manually install the latest Nvidia driver, but that did not change anything either. I have downloaded the latest BIOS from HP and installed that, but that didn't improve performance either. What am I missing? This PC was very expensive and with its hardware, it should handle these tasks with absolute ease.

 

Edit: Perhaps of use: When I look at the task manager while the GPUs are running at max during a simple video stream, the task that seems to completely kill the GPU is a task called "Desktop Window Manager" (dwm.exe).

The issue is the STREAMING, not the Browsers, per se.

 

I have a really OLD HP laptop, but with a new SSD, and an i5, it performs very well -- until I do Streaming.  Then if I try anything over 720p, it stutters and the 4-core processor maxes out.

 

My guess, based on tests with my laptop, is that it is real-time transcoding of large data streams that is the issue.

 

Sorry, I have no access to 4K equipment, so I can't try anything in that area.

no, the issue is that this 2000+$ laptop is barely usable performance-wise in regular desktop tasks and becomes pretty much completely unresponsive when watching a single 1080x60 video stream. It is not acceptable.

I can watch 4k streams on my phone without an issue. It is not a stream issue when I'm browsing regular web sites that only contain text and my GPUs are at 80% / 60% and everything is stuttery. Watching a video stream (which is not something any laptop these days should struggle with) is just when the problems get even worse.

You should not be having problems like this with a new PC!

You paid for free HP Tech Support as part of the warranty coverage, so you might as well make use of it.

Unfortunately, we are NOT HP Tech Support and we have no way to diagnose or repair your PC, so while this PC is still under warranty, you should contact HP Customer Support directly to have them put you in touch with HP Technical Support to see what they can do about troubleshooting and repairing your machine remotely.

I did this recently and the HP Tech was able to remotely access my PC from the Internet to check out the problems.

If they are unable to fix your PC, then you need to explore what options you have to get it replaced under the warranty.
