how to stop charging at 80 %

HP Recommended

@PratiusWelcome to the HP Support Community!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

To stop charging your laptop at 80%, it depends on the specific laptop model and its battery management software. Some HP laptops, like those with HP Battery Health Manager or HP Command Center, have an option to set a charging limit.

First, I’d need to know the exact product name or model of your laptop to guide you accurately.

However, here are some general steps to prevent your HP laptop from charging past 80%:

Access the BIOS Settings:

  • Turn off your laptop, then press F10 repeatedly as soon as you power it on to enter the BIOS settings.

Navigate to Power Management Options:

  • Once in BIOS, go to the Advanced tab, then select Power Management Options.

Select Battery Health Manager:

  • Under Power Management Options, choose the Battery Health Manager option.

Set to Maximize Battery Health:

  • In the Battery Health Manager, select the “Maximize my battery health” option. This will limit the charge to 80% to help prolong the battery's lifespan.

Once you’ve made the changes, be sure to save and exit BIOS. Your laptop will now stop charging beyond 80%.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thank you.

My question is for HP Laptop 17-cn2083dx (9P521UA).   I already downloaded and installed the latest BIOS ( version "F.12, 9/24/2024" ).  In the BIOS, I don't see the "Advanced tab".

HP Recommended

@Ed_NewUser, Since your HP Laptop 17-cn2083dx (9P521UA) does not have an "Advanced" tab in the BIOS, you can try the following alternative methods to limit battery charging to 80%:

Check HP Battery Health Manager in BIOS (If Available)

  • Restart your laptop and press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  • Look under Power Management or Battery Settings for a "Battery Health Manager" option.
  • If available, set it to "Maximize My Battery Health" (this limits charging to ~80%).
  • Save changes and restart your laptop.

Use HP Power Manager (For Supported Models)

  • Download HP Power Manager from HP Support
  • Open the app and look for a Battery Care Function or Charging Limit option.
  • If available, enable it to stop charging beyond 80%.

Use Windows Battery Management (Windows 11/10)

Some Windows 11/10 laptops have a built-in battery conservation mode:

  • Go to Settings → System → Power & battery.
  • Look for "Battery Saver" or "Smart Charging."
  • If there’s an option to set a charging limit, enable it.

Thank you for your three suggestions:

Your first and third suggestions were easy to check out.  If necessary, I could supply detail about their failure to help.

The second suggestion to download "HP Power Manager from HP Support", didn't help because "7z Setup SFX" (which came from "HP Support Solutions Framework-13.0.1.131") would not install correctly.  It ended up with, "An error occurred ... -3 "

I hope you have further ideas.  Again, thank you for your help!

HP Recommended

@Ed_NewUser, thank you for trying the above steps.

Since the HP Power Manager installation failed with error "-3", let's try a few troubleshooting steps:

  1. Run as Administrator – Right-click on the 7z Setup SFX file and select Run as administrator to see if it installs correctly.
  2. Disable Antivirus/Firewall Temporarily – Sometimes, security software may block installations. Try disabling it temporarily and then run the installer again.
  3. Extract Manually – If possible, extract the 7z Setup SFX file manually using 7-Zip or WinRAR and run the installer from the extracted folder.
  4. Check HP Support Assistant – If you haven't already, install or update HP Support Assistant (Download here) and check if it provides a battery optimization feature.
  5. BIOS or UEFI Settings – Some HP laptops allow battery charge limits through BIOS. Restart your laptop, enter BIOS (Esc → F10 on startup), and check for battery settings.

If none of these steps work, let me know the exact model of your HP laptop via private message so I can suggest a more tailored solution.

The HP Support Assistant showed that my "Adaptive Battery Optimization" is "Enabled/Not Activated".  In my BIOS or elsewhere, I couldn't find a way to set "Adaptive Battery Optimization" to "Enabled/Activated".

It appears that the "Enabled/Activated" option is only available for HP Gaming PCs.  (My session with HP's AI chat (?) listed the HP laptops with which "Enabled/Activated" was available & mine wasn't one of them.)

Do you know of a work-around for my "Adaptive Battery Optimization" situation?

Thank you.

@Ed_NewUser, Thank you for the response!

The "Adaptive Battery Optimization" feature is primarily available on select HP gaming laptops, such as the HP OMEN and HP Pavilion Gaming series. For these models, users can enable the feature through the BIOS settings.

For HP laptops that do not support "Adaptive Battery Optimization," there isn't an official method to limit the battery charge to 80% through HP's software or BIOS settings. However, you can adopt alternative practices to help prolong your battery's lifespan:

  1. Manual Charging Management: Regularly monitor your battery's charge level and disconnect the charger once it reaches around 80%. While this requires manual effort, it can help reduce battery wear over time.

  2. Power Settings Optimization: Adjust your Windows power settings to reduce battery strain. For instance, lowering screen brightness, enabling battery saver modes, and managing background applications can contribute to better battery health.

It's also advisable to keep your system's BIOS and drivers up-to-date, as manufacturers occasionally release updates that improve battery management features. You can check for updates through the HP Support Assistant or by visiting HP's official support website.

Thanks for the work that you have put into supporting my post!

It is disappointing that a manual-type remedy is necessary for my otherwise very capable and beautiful machine.

It looks like a BIOS update will cure the problem.  I hope there is no unseen hardware issue.

Coupled with the 80% problem, my attempts to use the Windows sleep utility have given unexpected results.  That is, in one sleep trial, after about one hour, without my involvement, the power light stopped blinking altogether.  Later, when I looked at the battery consumption history, I found that the battery consumption rate clearly increased after the power light stopped blinking.  If ignored, this condition would have drained the battery.  Therefore, I don't use the Windows sleep function anymore.  Do you think a BIOS update would also stop this unexpected sleep behavior?

@Ed_NewUser, You're welcome! I completely understand your frustration—having to manually troubleshoot a brand-new machine is never fun. However, it’s good news that a BIOS update might resolve your touchpad issue.

Will a BIOS Update Fix the Sleep Issue?

Yes, a BIOS update can help with sleep-related issues because:

  1. Power Management Fixes – Manufacturers often release BIOS updates to correct power management bugs, which could be causing your laptop to drain battery while in sleep mode.
  2. Hardware Compatibility Improvements – If your laptop isn’t handling low-power states correctly, a BIOS update can improve communication between Windows and the hardware.
  3. Battery Optimization – Since you're also dealing with an 80% charging limit problem, an updated BIOS might bring better battery management features.

Let me know if it helps!
