Hi @Andyjames

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it must feel to be stuck at the Microsoft account login screen on a brand‑new laptop. You’ve already tried to sign in, and seeing the “oops something went wrong” message can be discouraging.

Let’s go step by step to help you move past this and get your system set up smoothly.

Step 1: Check Internet Connection

  • Make sure the laptop is connected to a stable network.
  • If using Wi‑Fi, try switching to another network or connect directly with an Ethernet cable if available.
  • Restart the router to refresh the connection.

Step 2: Verify Date and Time

  • Press Shift + F10 on the login screen to open Command Prompt.
  • Type control and press Enter to open Control Panel.
  • Go to Date and Time and confirm that the settings are correct.
  • Incorrect date/time can block Microsoft services.

Step 3: Try a Local Account Setup

If the Microsoft login continues to fail, you can create a local account first and add your Microsoft account later.

  1. On the login screen, disconnect from the internet (turn off Wi‑Fi or unplug Ethernet).
  2. The setup should then offer the option to create an offline account.
  3. Once Windows is installed, reconnect to the internet and add your Microsoft account through Settings.

Step 4: Add Microsoft Account After Setup

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Navigate to Accounts > Your info.
  3. Select Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.
  4. Enter your credentials and complete the sign‑in.

Step 5: Update Windows

Once you’re signed in, ensure the system is fully updated:

  1. Go to Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and install any available updates.
  3. Restart the laptop after updates are applied.

Step 6: Use HP App for Diagnostics

  1. Open the HP App from the Start menu.
  2. Go to Support > Troubleshooting > Diagnose & Fix.
  3. Run the scan to confirm there are no system issues interfering with account login.

By following these steps, you should be able to bypass the login issue and later add your Microsoft account without interruptions.
