Hi @sam1322,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It can feel so stressful when your Chromebook reboots right after you remove the recovery USB, especially when you need it for school. Let’s work together to guide it back to a stable, ready-to-learn state.

1. Hard Reset to Start Clean

  • Hold the Power + Refresh keys for about 10 seconds to force a shutdown and clear any temporary system errors.
  • Then press Power to turn it back on, and immediately enter recovery mode by holding Esc + Refresh and then pressing Power. Let go once the recovery screen appears.

2. Make Sure the Recovery Media is Solid

  • Create the USB again using the Chromebook Recovery Utility on another computer.
  • Ensure the intervention-free USB is at least 16 GB, formatted FAT32 or exFAT; some smaller or corrupted drives cause loops.
  • Choose the exact model number of your Chromebook when creating the media.

3. Follow the Complete Process

  1. With the Chromebook off, insert the freshly made recovery USB.
  2. Hold Esc + Refresh, then press Power, and release Power once the recovery screen appears.
  3. Follow on-screen prompts until you see “System recovery is complete.”
  4. Crucially, wait for the restart prompt, then remove the USB only when asked, and let it reboot normally.

4. Try Internet-Based Recovery (on Supported Models)

  • Newer HP Chromebooks allow recovery without a USB, just via the internet.
  • On the recovery screen, select Recover using internet connection and follow prompts.

5. If It Reboots Immediately After USB Removal: Try Again

  • Reinsert the recovery USB and repeat the procedure.
  • Don’t remove it until you see the recovery-complete screen with specific “remove USB” instructions.
  • If it insists on rebooting before that, try a different USB stick, ideally from a known brand, and recreate the media.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
