Welcome to the HP support community.
I understand you're experiencing an issue changing name on computer, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.
If you've tried changing your laptop's name but it's still displaying the old name when you open it, here are some steps to help you fix it:
1. Check Windows Settings
- Open Settings: Go to Settings > System > About.
- Change PC Name: In the About section, you'll see the Device name. Click on Rename this PC, then enter the new name you want for your laptop and click Next.
- Restart: After changing the name, restart your laptop for the changes to take effect.
2. Check Computer Name in Control Panel (Advanced Step)
- Open Control Panel: Type "Control Panel" into the Start menu and open it.
- Navigate to System Settings: Go to System and Security > System.
- Change Computer Name: On the left side, click Advanced system settings, then under Computer Name, click Change.
- Enter New Name: In the Computer Name/Domain Changes window, enter the new name, click OK, and then restart your laptop.
3. Check the Name in the User Account
- Go to Settings: In Settings, navigate to Accounts > Your Info.
- Make Sure the Display Name is Correct: This controls what your name looks like in your account. This may not affect your laptop’s name directly, but it’s worth confirming.
4. Windows Username
- Go to Settings > Accounts > Your Info.
- You might be able to change the local account name here, or sign into a Microsoft account and adjust the name.
5. Restart or Refresh
- After you've made the change, make sure to restart your laptop to fully apply the new name.
- Sometimes, Windows needs a restart to sync the changes.
6. Network Display
- If you're seeing the old name on your network or when sharing files, sometimes it may take a little longer to update across all devices. Ensure your laptop is connected to the internet and has time to sync.
7. Command Prompt (Advanced Method)
- Open Command Prompt as Admin: Press Windows + X, then choose Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Run the Command: Type the following command:Replace "NewName" with the desired name for your laptop.
wmic computersystem where name="%computername%" call rename name="NewName"
- Restart your laptop after running the command.
8. Check for Multiple Profiles
I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
