My machine (I'm typig on it now) is also an HP EliteBook 840 g5 I5 8th generation, it has backlit symbol 
You are saying your machine does NOT have backlit key that means it does not have backlit keyboard.
(Note: HP EliteBook 840 g5 I5 8th generation is a series with many options).
